Vision Mine Automation
The automation will move the mine into a continuous
process that runs 24/7 with no operator at the
production face and full visualization.
The result is:
• Improved face utilisation
• Increased productivity
• Higher safety
That will give Boliden an ability to make profit on ores with lower
grades.

How to reach the vision?
Fact
‒ Internationally Boliden is a small company with limed assets.
‒ Our mines are getting deeper, the cost are increasing and the ore
content is often low.
‒ Boliden can not develop the needed technology.
‒ Some companies with the possibility to develop needed technology is
located in or close to Sweden, like Atlas Copco, Sandvik and ABB.
Conclusion
‒ Boliden must create some strategic partnership with a common
Autonomous Mine Vision.

Augmented Reality for Mine support functions

Area: Mine automation
Background
The machinery in our underground mines will become more and more complex. To
help the mechanics to do their job, augmented reality could be one way to go. Please
view http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9KPJlA5yds for a better understanding
Goal
To find a way to help our support personnel to do a efficient job. That said, if the
conclusion during this project will be that other technologies will give a better result
than augmented reality, it will be possible to present that as the final finding.
Description
Make a marker research as well as literature studies to find out the maturity level of
this technology. If the maturity level is acceptable we want to perform some sort of
live demo in a mine.

Robot Platform.

Area: Mine automation
Background
In the mine automation Program the goal is to have fully autonomous machines in the
mine in the future. To make that happen, a lot of new sensors, sw etc need to be
tested in a live environment. Pleas take a look at
http://www.irobot.com/en/us/robots/defense/firstlook.aspx
Goal
- Build up a “small” robot platform to use as a test bed for new sensor technology.
- Secure that this new platform complies to “maskinsäkerhetsdirektivet” in a way that
makes it possible to run this robot in areas where we have people working.
Description
It could be of some value to evaluate if the company Brokk http://www.brokk.com/sv/
could contribute to the buildup of a robot test bed. It is important to have a pragmatic
approach in this project. To build and make a full scale demo in a live environment is
a must for a successful project.

Evaluation of new radio technology.

Area: Mine automation
Background
Boliden is today building up wifi networks in our underground mines. The technology
is at least for now set, but what happens in the future when new Access Points will be
able to support multi technology? Is it possible that we in the future could benefit from
a shift from wifi to new 4G technology? Something is going on in the market:
http://www.iwpc.org/Workshop_Folders/13_01_Orange/13_01_Agenda_Orange.html
Goal
- Perform test of new multi technology APs in underground mines.
- Investigate on what terms Boliden and other mining companies can use this 4G
equipment.
Description
Each test must be done with at least 3 APs in a underground mine.
The test must, if possible, be done in two different test scenarios
- a mine with curvy “small profile” tunnels like Kristineberg
- a mine with “large scale” tunnels like LKAB Kiruna
