Research Approach
 Interdisciplinary approach: Legal, Economic,
Political, Social and Other Issues Associated
with Environmental Problems
 International approach: in collaboration with
a number of institutes in the Asia-Pacific
region, as well as with governments and
international organizations such as UNEP,
ESCAP and ADB.

Climate Policy
 proposes both international and domestic
policy measures, synchronizing with
development of international negotiations
 implements a capacity building
programme for CDM in Asian countries,
called “Integrated Capacity Strengthening
for Clean Development Mechanism (ICSCDM)” from October 2003.

Urban Environmental Management
 develops useful ideas and models to serve
as guidelines for urban environmental
management policies in the AP region
 provides relevant research for policymakers
through the following three research
themes:

i) study on the process dynamics of urban
environmental evolution;
ii) study on urban policy integration of energy
related environmental issues in Asian megacities; and
iii) support for implementation of the Kitakyushu
Initiative for a Clean Environment.
Business and the Environment
 aims at integrating environmental
management and business management
systems towards a sustainable
development focusing on analysis and
evaluation of environmental management
systems: LCA
 strengthen ties with the Kansai and AP
regions distributing its research results
widely along with development of
information disclosure system


Forest Conservation
 aims to develop feasible strategies for a
sustainable participatory forest
management, and to develop "Village
Action Guidelines," "National Policy
Recommendations," and "Local Policy
Guidelines" in local languages as well as in
English
 strives to carry out researches with a
global perspective based upon the local
realities

Environmental Education
 designs policy proposals focusing on the
following three research topics:
i) development of environmental education
materials,
ii) human resource development, and
iii) development of innovative eco-tourism
education models in the AP region.
 builds up a framework of IGES as a hub of
environmental education in the AP region.

Capacity Building Program
 offers a wide variety of opportunities for
learning on sustainable development
issues through its e-Learning system.
 provides
a. trainings that bridge between policy-research
and policy-implementation, in collaboration
with Japanese and international partners
(UNEP, UNU, UNFCC, IPCC/TSU and UNDP);
b. research which results in innovative training
methodologies; and
c. internship that strengthens leadership
capacities of LEAD
