Go to the page that you will be taping
your vocabulary sheet to and write
down as many sources of light that you
can think of, on your OWN!
Light
Vocabulary
Electromagnetic Spectrum
– a group of waves that includes:
Radio Waves
o Microwaves
o Infrared Light
o Visible Light
o Ultra Violet Light
o X-Rays
o Gamma Rays
o
(Visible) Light
– is the part of the electromagnetic
spectrum that can be seen by the
human eye
Transmission
– the movement of light waves
from one place to another
o A medium is not needed for light
waves to be transmitted
Example: light traveling through
space from the Sun to Earth
Remember…“trans” means across
Prism
- tool used to split white light into
different wavelengths (colors)

Refraction
– a change in direction (bending)
of a light wave due to a change
in its’ speed
Reflection
– a change in direction of a light
wave due to an obstruction, this
gives objects “color”
Color
– what we visually see (the
absorbed wavelengths of light)
Absorption
– when an object takes in
wavelengths of light, what is
reflected is what we see as color
Scattering
– the spreading of light in all
directions due to reflection and
absorption
Transparent
– when an object allows most all
light through it
Translucent
– when an object allows some
light through it and spreads out
the rest
Opaque
– when an object does not allow
any light to pass through it
because they reflect and/or
absorb the light
