Thursday, February 6, 2014 Objectives:

 Analyze the eulogies of Brutus and Mark Antony for Pathos, Ethos, and Logos.  Compare and discuss the effectiveness of the rhetoric used in each speech.

DO NOW: In your reading log, write today’s date and answer the following question: Thou art a citizen of Rome during the reign of Caesar and thou hast been asked to join the conspiracy against him. What is thy response? Be sure to giveth a reason for thy answer.

Pathos: Ethos: etc.

Logos: appeal to emotion (sadness, anger, guilt, etc.) establishes the speaker’s credibility with the crowd through trustworthiness, personal experience, position/profession, appeal to logic, a fact-based argument

Brutus’ Speech

“Romans, countrymen, and lovers!”

Pathos

“Believe me for mine honour, and have respect to mine honour”

Ethos

“If there be any in this assembly, any dear friend of Caesar's, to him I say, that Brutus' love to Caesar was no less than his.”

Ethos

“As Caesar loved me, I weep for him; as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was valiant*, I honour him; but, as he was ambitious*, I slew him. There is tears for his love; joy for his fortune; honour for his valour; and death for his ambition”

Logos

“ Who is here so rude that would not be a Roman? . . . Who is here so vile* that will not love his country?”

Pathos

What does Brutus want the crowd to understand?

1. Caesar was ambitious. 2. Brutus murdered him for the good of Rome.

Mark Antony’s Speech

“Friends, Romans, countrymen”

Pathos

“He was my friend, faithful and just to me”

Ethos

“He hath brought many captives home to Rome whose ransoms did the general coffers* fill”

Logos

“When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept”

Logos

“You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse”

Logos

“I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know.”

Ethos

“O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me.” (tear*)

Pathos

What does Mark Antony attempt to do in his speech?

1. Prove Caesar was not ambitious. 2. Blame the conspirators for the wrongful death of Caesar.
