Activating Pilot Account
(first time users)
Web-based Activation
Browse to http://pilot.msu.edu/twig
1. Click on the link on the lower right that says 'Set Up Your
Pilot Account'
2. Follow directions carefully. Enter your MSU identification
number and PIN in as prompted.
3. Enter a secure password when prompted. Pilot displays
your MSUnet ID. For future logins use this ID and
password to enter Pilot.

Telnet-based Activation on Windows
1.
Click on the Start button, then on Run.
2.
Type telnet pilot.msu.edu in the 'Run' window.
3.
The Pilot Welcome Screen will then display. You will be prompted to
log in.
4.
At the login prompt, type pilot and press the ENTER key
5.
After reading the MSUnetID Administration page, enter your MSU
Identification Number and press the ENTER key.
6.
Enter your four-digit PIN and press ENTER key.
7.
After reading the Assigning a Password to Your Pilot Account page,
type what you would like your password to be and press the Enter
key.
8.
Retype the password for verification purposes and press the Enter
key.

Once the password is successfully set, the Logging into the PILOT
System screen displays. This screen will give you your Pilot ID
(username). Note: It is VERY important to make a note of your Pilot ID!

You can access your email via http://pilot.msu.edu/twig or via
telnet Start -> Run -> telnet pilot.msu.edu
Telnet-based Activation on Macintosh

Open Telnet (OSX users may launch Terminal, then type: telnet
pilot.msu.edu at the prompt. Proceed to step 3).
2.
Login in, using the host pilot.msu.edu
3.
The Pilot Welcome Screen will then display. You will be prompted to log
in.

Follow steps 2-4

Mail.msu allows every MSU student to exchange
electronic mail with other e-mail users on the world
wide Internet
You can connect to pilot from most public Microlabs

To connect to mail.msu Go to http://mail.msu.edu/
Type in your Pilot ID and password to access your mail
FTP
What is FTP?
FTP is File Transfer Protocol.
It is used for transferring files between your computer and a remote
system (e.g. web server)
PC Users
A popular FTP software is for windows is WS_FTP. It is freely
available on the web for educational purposes at
http://www.download.com
FTP for PC
-Open the WS_FTP application program.
There will be sessions properties window.
-Type in the host name or IP address
-e.g, pilot.msu.edu
-- If you know the host type, select from
drop down list otherwise select Automatic
detect which takes care of 90% ftp sites
-Type in your username and password. You
can specify any profile name for the host if it
doesn’t exist
-Click OK

-Select the files or folders on the
source system.
Open the folder to which you want
to transfer files on the destination
system.
Select the file transfer mode.
Transfer the files using the left and
right arrow buttons located between
the list boxes.
Click the left arrow button to
transfer files from the remote to the
local system.
Click the right arrow button to
transfer files from the local system
to the FTP site.

Fetch is a Macintosh program
for transferring files
Connecting: When you start
Fetch or choose the New
Connection... menu item you
will be prompted with the
connection dialog box.
Specifiy the name or IP number
of the machine you wish to
connect to e.g pilot.msu.edu
You may enter an user id and
password.

•Getting a File
- To get a file, drag it to the Finder,
double-click on its name or select it
and click the Get File... Button.
- To get multiple files, or directories,
click on them while holding down the
Command key and then drag them to
the Finder or click the Get... button.
•Putting a File
- To transfer a file from your Macintosh
to another machine click on the Put
File... button. You will be asked to
pick a file and prompted for the name
and format to give the file you are
putting.
- To transfer multiple files, or folders,
to another machine hold down the
Option key while pressing the Put
File... button, or choose Put Folders
and Files… from the Remote menu.
