WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER!
ABOUT APASS
Began at City College of San Francisco in 2004
To support AAPI students with high needs
Created at College of Alameda in 2009 with two
other learning communities
Initiated here at Laney College in Spring 2010
using special funding under the AANAPISI Grant
ABOUT AANAPISI
Asian American Native American Pacific Islander
Serving Institution
5-Year Federal Grant to develop best practices to
support AAPI students at 2- and 4-year
institutions
THE PROBLEM WITH THE “MODEL MINORITY”
 AAPI student is an invisible crisis.
 Focus on model minority “success” resulted in less attention to low
achievement among AAPI students, leads to neglect of programs and
services for AAPI students.
 This myth ignores how AAPI students contend with the same issues that
other communities face.
 AAPI data masks high levels of poverty and academic barriers. Data on
some AAPI groups are nonexistent.
AAPI College Enrollment are evenly distributed in two-year and four-year
institutions, with the majority attending public institutions.
AAPI ENROLLMENT IN PUBLIC TWO-YEAR COMMUNITY
COLLEGES IS INCREASING FASTER THAN IN FOUR-YEAR
COLLEGES.
