Native Tribes in SC
CHEROKEE, CATAWBA, YEMASSEE
LANGUAGE


There were many Eastern
Woodlands tribes in South
Carolina. Each had specific
ways of living depending
upon where they lived.
South Carolina tribes
shared the Algonquin
language and preserved
their history through the
oral tradition of storytelling.
CHEROKEE
The Cherokee was a
Native American nation
that lived in the foothills
and mountains of South
Carolina at the time of the
encounter with
Europeans.
 The Cherokee called
themselves ‘the real
people’ and were a
powerful nation.

A wooden palisade (fence) surrounded
the village with watch towers were
built.
CHEROKEE
Their summer homes
were open to the air;
their winter homes
had thick walls made
of a mixture of grass
and clay called daub.
 The roofs were made
of bark and branches
called wattle.

CHEROKEE
Village leaders made the
rules.
 The village was led by a
White leader in times of
peace; the Red leader in
times of war.
 Each village also had a
holy man or woman.

CATAWBA

The Catawba tribe,
who called themselves
the “river people”,
lived along the rivers of
the Piedmont region in
villages surrounded by
a palisade.
CATAWBA
Catawba tribes lived in wigwams.
WIGWAMS
Wigwams were made
by bending trees to
form the round shape
of the home. Pieces of
tree bark were
overlapped to protect
the Indians from bad
weather.
Over the bark a layer of thatch, or dried grass,
was added. A small hole in the top allowed
smoke from the fires to escape. Beds were
matting covered with animal skin.
CATAWBA

The Catawba also
had council houses
where leaders made
the rules for the
people.
The Catawba were great potters,
using clay that they shaped into
pots.
YEMASSEE

The Yemassee nation
was originally from
Spanish Florida
(present day Georgia)
but later moved to the
coast of South Carolina
near the mouth of the
Savannah River to
escape the Spanish
governor.
YEMASSEE
During the summer they
lived on the beach in
wigwams covered with
palmetto leaves.
 During the winter they lived
farther inland in wattle and
daub homes like the
Cherokee.
 Clams and oysters were part
of their diet.

YEMASSEE
The Yemassee also had a
council that sometimes
included women.
 The Yemassee fled to
Florida after War with the
settlers.
