Apprenticeship Progression –
What We Mean
Supporting individuals on the basis of their ability,
aspiration and frequently with reference to employer
need, progress to the next level/new job role and/or a
higher education or higher level learning programme.
• Linear and non-linear
• Horizontal as well as vertical
• Prescribed HE qualifications (e.g. Foundation and
Bachelors degrees), non-prescribed HE and
professional qualifications.
Why Progression is Important
• Progression enables employers to grow and develop
their existing employees
• Progression is important for national competitiveness
and growth
• Higher level skills/qualifications equate with high
earnings
• Apprenticeship progression enhances social mobility
• Progression supports parity with academic pathways
• Demonstrating progression opportunities will be a key
approach to growing apprenticeship numbers at all
levels
