About the Institute
The major provider of initial teacher education and continuing
professional development for teachers at undergraduate and
postgraduate level in the North West
One of the largest teacher training establishments in the country.
Almost 4,000 students and 150 highly qualified and experienced
tutors
Based on three campuses - Didsbury, Crewe and Alsager, but your
course of study will be undertaken at one campus only.

The subject and age group you intend to teach

an age group and/or subject. If, for example, you'd like
to teach a subject to an advanced level, you may choose

Undergraduate > PGCE
Route
• The most common choice for secondary education, but
also for primary and for PCET (Post-compulsory Education
Training for FE colleges).
• You would train on a degree
programme in your choice of subject
(take advice about what will enable you
to apply for a teaching course afterwards)
• Then you take a one year PGCE to
qualify as a teacher.

The 1 Year PGCE
Programme
• The teaching programme on a PGCE is more intense
than Undergraduate study!
• Thirty-six weeks in duration, of which 120 days (24
weeks) in placements.
• Assignments contribute towards 60 CATS (MA)

Applying to MMU
• All trainees apply through the GTTR (graduate routes).
• Applicants must meet the Grade C GCSE requirements in Maths,
English and, for Primary, in science as well.

Interviews
• Interviews are allocated to people on the quality of their
application form and selected because we think they have the
potential to be good teachers.
• We look for some experience of experience / observation /
voluntary work in schools, working with young people in other
settings.
• Also look for ICT and general communication skills.
• Interviews comprise group discussions / presentations /
individual interviews / written & spoken tasks.

Working in Partnership

– schools take a key role in
assessing you as a trainee teacher
• We try to ensure you have a chance to work in different
contexts

Whilst on Placement you will work alongside:
• a Professional Mentor (who has an overview of all ITT in
the school) who will provide professional issues
support,
• and a Subject or Class Mentor who will guide you in
your main subject or with your primary class.

Assessment
• Formal assignments that integrate practice, observation and
research. Yes you do have to read books! Teaching is an
academic profession. Assignments are worth 60 CATS towards
an MA.
• Record of Professional Development - reflective writing, selfevaluation, study tasks, Subject knowledge audit - a ‘portfolio’ of
evidence monitored through the Review Process.
• School Placement – judged against the Standards for Qualified
Teacher Status
