CORE Program Specifications 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Specifications 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Introduction • A Specification is: – A set of instructions detailing the method of surface preparation and coating application, the coating to be used for completion of a project. – In construction – a clear accurate description of the technical requirement (for contract purposes) for materials, products and services. 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Introduction Purpose of a “spec” • • • • • • to obtain a specific desires product to ensure quality materials & workmanship to ensure completion of work to avoid delays & disputes to obtain minimum or reasonable costs to make the contract available to as many qualified bidders as possible • to avoid costly change orders or claims • to meet safety, environmental, and legal requirements 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Introduction Poorly written “specs” can result in: • • • • • Bidding problems Bids from unqualified contractors Unrealistic bids – too high or too low Alternative products (not approved) Alternative methods & systems (not appropriate) 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review 3 Basic Parts • Part 1 – General – Summary or introduction – References – Definitions – Submittal – Quality Assurance – Delivery, storage & handling – Site Conditions 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review 3 Basic Parts • Part 2 - Products – Requirements for the materials to be used – May also include abrasives, cleaners, thinners, etc. – Products for multi-coat system should be purchased through a single supplier to avoid incompatibility problems 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review 3 Basic Parts • Part 3 - Execution – Work conditions – Surface preparation – Coating application – Inspection 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Four Types • The following types of guides specifications that are available through MPI – – – – Guide Specification – Painting (long form) Guide Specification – Painting (short form) Guide Specification – Wall covering Guide Specification – Architectural Abrasive Balsting 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Use of Guide Specifications • Painting & Decorating falls under Division 9 – Finishes within the 16 part Master Format • Use of a painting spec requires an understanding of the spec writing process and should not be taken lightly (options chosen should be reviewed carefully and amended to suit specific project requirements) • When using the MPI “specs” – All references to the MPI should be retained within the body of the spec – Errors, omissions, comments or suggested revisions should be forwarded to MPI for future revisions of the documents 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Use of Guide Specifications • You may edit the spec sections as required to suit the project requirements by: – Deleting all inapplicable information – Editing listed items as noted by SPEC NOTE • When using the MPI Interior and Exterior Painting Schedules you should: – Choose the appropriate EXT and INT paint system number (system number & finish noted) – Select & insert the gloss requirements – Select either custom or premium grade as required for each selected system or if all the work is either custom or premium include a note to specify same – Make sure that the manufacturer’s paint color numbers on the finish schedule also match the gloss level required. 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review Use of Guide Specifications • The Design Authority should also produce a finish schedule which should include for both interior and exterior painting: – – – – – All surface substrates Locations Colors Gloss levels Manufacturer’s color code 7/18/2015 MPI Training Review
