The Knee
The Knee
 Three major bones and
a minor one




Tibia
Fibula
Femur
Patella
The Knee
 Landmarks on the bones
 Tibial Tuberosity- anterior proximal tibia, where the
patellar tendon attatches.
The Knee
 Landmarks on the
bones
 Condyles-round
prominences at the
end of a bone.
 Tibial Plateau- area
the knee flexes and
extends, it is a the flat
top of the tibia.
The Knee
 Cartilage-two kinds
 Articular Cartilagecovers the tibia and
femur and provides a
smooth surface for
movement.
The Knee
 Cartilage-two kinds
 Meniscus- there are
two and they are in
between the tibia and
femur. They act as
shock absorbers,
distribute force and
help stabilize the
joint.
The Knee
 Four Major Ligaments




Lateral Collateral Ligament-LCL
Medial Collateral Ligament-MCL
Anterior Cruciate Ligament-ACL
Posterior Cruciate Ligament-PCL
The Knee
 MCL and LCL attach the
femur to the tibia and
fibula on the sides of the
knee.
 They work with the other
two ligament to provide
stability to the knee
The Knee
 Cruciate is a latin work
meaning cross
 Anterior Cruciate Ligament
prevents anterior movement
of the tibia on the femur.
APEX will help to remember
the location of the ligament.
The Knee
 Posterior Cruciate
Ligament prevents
posterior movement of
the tibia on the femur.
PAIN will help to
remember the location of
the ligament.
 Both Cruciate ligaments
also help control rotation
and medial and lateral
stability.
Patellofemoral Joint
 Patella- is encased in
the quadriceps
tendon and is a
sesamoid bone. It
allows the knee to
flex and extend while
putting less pressure
on the quadriceps.
 If the patella does
not slide in it’s preset
groove problems can
