Historical Notes…
The annual Southern Plains N-Scale Convention and the annual
OKC Train Show is a popular event in Oklahoma. I had heard it was the
fourth largest train show in the country but was never able to confirm
that. A group from Denver has attended for many years.
The N scale convention is the Thursday before the Train Show and
normally consists of tours and clinics with a swap meet and gettogether that evening. Friday morning is open so we go to museums or
railfan Oklahoma City. At noon the setup of the NTRAK layout starts.
The train show is on Saturday and Sunday and usually has over 125
vendors.
I had not attended since 2005 so was anxious to go. However, the
distance, weather and economy kept the Denver contingent low. Only
four of us attended. Kent Charles, Dean Dickerhoof, Bob Hochstetter
and I (Patrick Lana) truck-pooled in Kent’s truck along with Kent’s two
modules and Dean’s module.

Thursday Lunch at Johnnie’s
Onion-fried burgers are Johnnie's
claim to fame. Ribbons of onion
are mashed deep into the top of a
patty of ground beef as it cooks on
the grill, resulting in a hamburger
that is a delicious intertwined mix
of meat and caramelized onion.
Also notable: slaw-topped Coney
Island hot dogs.

Saturday N-Scale Convention banquet at the Clarion Hotel
1. A very good meal of roast beef.
2. A great presentation on Rock Island in El Reno.
3. Door prizes:
One blue ticket at each table setting for an Intermountain first
release Y-12 steam locomotive. We did not win.
Each person received one ticket for a door prize. There were enough
prizes so each person received one. Kent won first, a year’s
subscription to RMC. Dean won a CMW two-pack of Specter semitrucks. Then I won with an Athearn CB&Q automobile box car. Finally
Bob won a $10 off coupon to Blair Lines laser cut signs.
But Bob came out the best of us when he won the raffle door prize
drawing for an Athearn CSX SD70M. Some guys have all the luck!

Final Notes:
The Clarion Hotel rate was $64.00 per double per night and is located
near I-40 and Meridian Ave in OKC.
The Train Show announced it had its best attendance ever with over
19,500 through the gates.
We decided to return via the SW route instead of returning on the NE
route due to snow on I-70. Total Mileage on the trip was 1,542 miles.
Bob Hochstetter, Dean Dickerhoof, Kent Charles and I all enjoyed the
trip but I caught a cold on Sunday and passed it on to Dean and Kent
on our return home. My doctor said my case was bronchitis and I was
down for over a week following the trip.
Our thanks to all the sponsors of the 15th Annual Southern Plains NScale Convention and the 33rd Annual OKC Train Show for a
WONDERFUL Time!
