1. Landscape Location of Moore, OK – Why was it located 9 miles south of OKC and north of Norman in Cleveland County?

Moore was a stop on the Southern Kansas RR in 1886 It was part of the Unassigned Lands and the Land Run of 1899.
There was a watering hole there, which is why the RR stop was established.
A man who worked for the RR, named Al Moore, lived in a boxcar . That’s why the name was changed from Verbeck to Moore.
In the 1970s Moore was nicknamed the Minute City” because of its close proximity and easy access to locations like Midwest City, Tinker AFB, O.U. Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center, and York International.
I-35 and USHW 77 run through its city limits.
It is in the middle of “Tornado Alley. Most recent tornadoes were in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2010 and 2013.
Moore is currently recovering from its most recent major tornado – May 2013, that destroyed the new Moore Hospital.

1886 – began as a railroad depot 1893 – grew to have a livery stable, 3 general stores, a hotel, saloon, restaurant, lumber company, grocer, 2 doctors and its own newspaper.
1899 – got its own postal address 1900 – 129 residents 1910 – 225 residents – an interurban railroad line to OKC was added, major fire destroys many buildings 1920 254 residents – 4 general stores and a high school were added 1930 – 538 citizens – 2 more banks, a milling and grain company 1940 – 499 residents 1950 – 942 residents 1960 – 1783 residents - 1962 Moore became a city 1970 – 18, 761 residents – 1971 Moore got its own hospital 1980 – 36,063 residents 1990 – 40, 318 residents – 1999 Most violent tornado ever recorded – (F5) 2000 – 41,138 residents 2010 – 55,081 residents – a new medical facility was completed in 2005.
