Structure type is determined by:

Total number of housing units contained under one roof Whether & in what way the units are attached to one another Method of construction

Single-Family Detached 1 unit All walls are detached Site-built Duplex 2 units Side by side or one above the other Site-built

Townhouse 3 or more units Adjoining side walls Site-built Apartment Building 3 or more units Adjoining sides, floors and/ or ceilings Site-built Walk-up Medium-rise High-rise 3 stories or less 4-5 stories More than 5 stories

Manufactured Housing

95 – 100% built in a factory & then transported to the site Fewer than 5% are moved once placed on a site Comprise about 7% of current housing stock Single-section or Multi-section Homes

Log Homes

Majority are turn-key, but you can build one yourself Over 500 log companies Most are primary residences

Potential Advantages

Diversity Low maintenance Energy efficient Flexible to fit different lifestyles Longevity

Potential Disadvantages

Not easy to build Logs may crack Location —zoning Log Homes Council

Panelized Housing

Built from factory-assembled panels Each panel is a sandwich of materials & may include exterior siding, frame, insulation, interior surface & electrical/plumbing pieces Put together at the site

Many design possibilities Strong panels allow spacious, open floorplans Enclosed within 1-2 weeks May be problems with financing & zoning

Modular Housing

Modules are built in a factory, moved to the site in several sections (containing several rooms each) & assembled at the site Quick to build & less expensive May have limited designs

Kit Houses Order from a catalog Materials are delivered in crates with instructions Can complete much of the work yourself Loft house that can be built by 2 people
