Bedd Gelert
A legend from
Great Britain
The Children in 5G at Leasowes
Primary School have painted
pictures to tell the story of Bedd
Gelert
In a small village in North Wales
lived a Prince. His name was
Llewellyn.
Prince Llewellyn had a hunting dog,
called Gelert, he loved his faithful
dog very much.
Prince Llewellyn heard the sound of hunting dogs and
thought a share of the hunt must be his. He told Gelert to
look after his son and keep him safe, while he was away.
Prince Llewellyn left his castle to
join the hunt leaving Gelert looking
after his son.
No sooner than he had left, a wolf could smell a child, the
Prince’s child and he came in, trying to eat it.
Gelert fought the wolf to try and
save Prince Llewellyn's precious
child.
Gelert waited patiently for Llewellyn
to return from the hunt. Gelert was
shocked and tired.
Prince Llewellyn arrived back and saw
blood all over Gelert and the baby. The
Prince could not believe what he could
see.
He thought Gelert, his faithful hound, had killed his
only child. He took out his sword and put it through
Gelert’s heart.
Gelert was dead! Prince Llewellyn
did not see the dead wolf in the
corner of the room until it was too
late.
Prince Llewellyn never forgave himself for
when he killed his faithful friend, Gelert. In
Wales there is a village that has a memorial
stone in memory of Gelert.
