ABIDE IN CHRIST
ABIDE IN MY LOVE
BE READY THE WORLD WILL HATE YOU
THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
YOUR SORROW WILL TURN TO JOY
JESUS’ PRAYER
Abide in Christ
(John 15:1-8)
 Christ -> Vine
 Father -> Vinedresser
Non Fruit Bearing
Fruit Bearing
• Taken Away
• What normally happens? (v. 6)
• Prunes
• What happens?
 What had made them clean? (V. 3 )
 Abide in Me and I in you


The branch can’t bear fruit unless it abides in the vine
We can’t bear fruit unless we abide in Christ (the word)
 If you abide in Me and My words abide in you, what shall
be done for you? (v. 7)
Abide in My Love
(John 15:9-17)
 Even as the Father hath loved me, I also have loved
you: abide ye in my love.
 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my
love

Even as I have kept My Father’s commandments
 These things I have spoken that My “joy” may be in
you


How does Jesus have joy with what He is about to face?
That “your joy” may be full (14:27-28)

How can they have joy when He is about to be beaten and
murdered?
Abide in My Love
(John 15:9-17)
 This is My commandment, that ye love one another
 Even as I have loved you!
 Hard???
 Greater love hath no man …..
 Who is His friends? (v. 14) See a pattern?
 Notice the difference in Friends and Servants (v. 15)
 These things I command you …
 Bear fruit
 Love one another
Be Ready the World Will Hate You
(John 15:18-25)
 If the world hates you, know it is because they hate me
(Does this sound familiar?)
 What if the world doesn’t hate you? (v. 19)

The world love those who give approval to their actions and hates
those who condemn their actions
 If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you

If they kept My word, they will keep yours also
 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have
no sin

But now they have no excuse for their sin
 If I had not done the works of My Father among them,
they would have no sin,

But now they have seen and hated both Me an My Father
HE WHO HATES ME HATES MY FATHER
Be Ready the World Will Hate You
(John 15:18-25)
 Another key passage
 Without knowledge of sin, they would not be guilty
 Now that Christ has come, spoke and shown with evidence of
the power, they are convicted of their sins
 Reminds me of John 12:48
 Notice the transition in verse 25 “their law”
HE WHO HATES ME HATES MY FATHER
The Work of the Holy Spirit
(John 15:26-16:15)
 Jesus continues to prepare them for His departure
 The Helper will come
 Spirit of truth
 He will testify of me
 He will teach you all things (14:26)
 He will remind you of everything I have said (14:26)
 Why is Jesus telling them this? (16:1 & 4)
 They will put you out of the synagogue
 They will think they offer God a service by killing you
 Do you sense the urgency of this message?
The Work of the Holy Spirit
(John 15:26-16:15)
 Now I go to My Father who sent me
 Sorrow has filled the apostles heart (v. 6)
 It is to your advantage that I go…. Why?
 The Helper will







Convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment
Deliver the many things Jesus still needs to tell them
Guide you into all truth
Will not speak on His own authority but what He hears He will speak
Tell you things to come
He will Glorify Me
Take what is Mine and declare it to you
Your Sorrow Will Turn to Joy
(John 16:16-33)
 A little while -> You will not see me
 Another little while -> You will see me
 Because I go to My Father
 Disciples are perplexed
 Jesus responds, are you inquiring among yourself..
 You will weep and lament
 The world will rejoice
 Your sorrow will turn to joy
 A woman’s labor
 Then, you will ask Me nothing
 Who will they ask?
Your Sorrow Will Turn to Joy
(John 16:16-33)
 Jesus transitions from figurative to plain language
 Notice the attention to prayer, asking, (15:7, 16, 16: 23,
26)
 You will ask the Father



He will hear because he loves you (because you love/believe)
I will not pray for you (in your place)
You will ask in My name
 Disciples -> Now he speaks plainly



Read 16:30
Jesus response, “Do you now believe?”
They will be scattered but Jesus will not be alone
 These things have been spoken that you may have peace
in me (not in the world)

Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world
Jesus’ Prayer for Himself
(John 17:1-5)
 The hour has come, Glorify Your Son
 Can you imagine how Jesus felt about the approaching events?
 Glorify – Give dignity, honor, adorn, praise, etc….
 Christ is given authority over all flesh
 What is eternal life? (v.3)
 I have finished the work You have given Me to do
Jesus’ Prayer for His Disciples
(John 17:6-18)
 I have given them Your words
 They have kept them
 They have received them
 They know I came from You
 They believe
 Jesus prays for His Disciples (not the world)
 I am no longer in the world
 Keep them (through Your name)
 Let them be one as We are one
 Only Judas was lost that the scripture might be fulfilled
Jesus’ Prayer for His Disciples
(John 17:6-18)
 I come to you
 These things I speak so they may have My joy fulfilled in
themselves
 I have given them Your word
 The world has hated them (sound familiar)
 I do not pray that they be taken out of the world
 Jesus prayed that they be kept from the evil one
 Sanctify them by your truth, Your word is truth.
Jesus’ Prayer for All Believers
(John 17:20-26)
 Jesus prays for those who will believe in me through
“their” word


This is for us
Who is “their” in verse 20?
 Peace/Unity
 They may all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in You
 They may be one in Us
 That the world may believe
 I desire that they be with Me, where I am
 They may behold My Glory
 Your love may be in them
