SDM Program Options
A guide for SDM11
Leadership, Innovation, Systems Thinking
1
SDM History & Finances
• SDM was set up as a financially independent program
within MIT
– Premium content is part of the program
– Different options have different tuition levels
– Not compatible with the normal MIT billing process
• Some fees (e.g. student life) still billed directly by MIT
• Some fees (e.g., video bridge charges) are billed by
SDM
• SDM pays tuition to MIT on students’ behalf
• SDM rates are set as a program, rather than ‘a la carte’

‘Per-semester’ Tuition Breakdown
•
•
•
•
•
Full-time students: $22,987.47
These amounts are all billed
16 month students: $20,529.50
by SDM. DO NOT pay tuition
to MIT – SDM will pay MIT
24 month commuter: $13,156
on your behalf.
24 month distance: $15,353.50
Both 24-month rates are nominally limited to 3 full
courses/term (36 credit hours except resident term for
distance students—exception not applicable for
commuters)
• Primary SDM fee is video bridge fee for distance
students
– $800 per site per course for full (9-12 unit) course
– $400 per site per course for half course
– Very competitive with other bridge services
• About $20/hour depending on number of sessions
• Recoups what MIT pays our bridge contractor

How Much Support does a TA or RA Provide?
• Examples:
– Full TA in a course:
• Full amount of 24-month commuter tuition (no premium required)
• Stipend at normal MIT or Sloan rate (approx. $2100/month)
• Student health
– Full RA:
• 24-month commuter tuition, stipend, student health
• Strict 36 credit limit
• Expectation of 25-30 hours of work on the RA project each week
• Summer issues
– No subsidy of tuition for the summer: if you take classes,
you must pay
– Don’t surprise your sponsor with a large bill!
– Partial is scaled accordingly

Changing Program Options
• Some students find that they wish to change
program options during their SDM tenure
– Job changes
– Personal circumstances
• Program option changes require director’s
approval and agreement on financial changes
• In some circumstances, a leave of absence is
available, but must be arranged ahead of time
• SDM tries to accommodate student needs
wherever practical and possible

Guiding Philosophy for Option Changes
• In all cases, finances are arranged to ensure equitable
treatment with respect to:
– Other SDM students
– MIT as an institution
• SDM cannot ‘discount’ MIT tuition
– Program approved by the Faculty according to expectations
regarding financial fairness to other MIT students and programs
– 24-month rates are part-time rates (only available to SDM,
except for ‘Special Student’ rate)
• Implication: If you change options, your new financial
plan must maintain equitable treatment for other SDM
students and MIT

Example: Commuter Student takes 1
semester as Distance
• Distance premium is $13,185
• Nominally spread over 5 semesters of distance
study (= $2,637 per semester)
• Student should expect to pay:
– Tuition: $13,156 + $2,637 = $15,793
– Plus video bridge fees for courses taken
• This provides flexibility for working students who
get transferred or are on extended travel
• Can mix commuter and distance by semester
with approval

Example: Commuter to Full Time
• Scenario: A student who has been a commuter for a
year decides to switch to full time to complete the
program earlier
• Commuter 24 month committed amount for the program
was $78,936 of which $39,468 has been paid
• Final semester will be billed at $29,494 to maintain
equity with other students
– Maintains equity with 13-month students, who will pay $68,962
for same program content
– Simply changing to 13-month rate for final semester would result
in a program tuition ‘price’ of $62,455.47, disadvantaging the fulltime students

Example: Additional semester for 13month option
• If courses are taken by 13-month students for
the 4th semester, charges are same rate as
commuter: $13,156 with no load limit
• If student takes ‘Thesis only’, charge is the same
$13,156 but is pro-rated by completion week

Remember…
• All program option changes require my approval,
and financial arrangements must be made
before the change is effective
• The guiding philosophy is equity with your fellow
students and with the Institute
• Our intention is to provide the highest degree of
flexibility to meet your needs as professionals
while being fair to both your classmates and the
Institute
