2008.
H.H. Srimath Thirukkudanthai Andavan, the 9th Peetathipathi of the Ashramam:
Sri Vedantha Ramanuja Maha Desikan, who took Srirangam Srimath Andavan Periasramam, to glorious heights of
growth, spreading it literally across length and breadth of the country. Srimath Thirukkudanthai Andavan was born
in a small village called “ Karukudi” (situated next to Thirukkandiyur in Tanjore district) in the banks of river Kaveri
in the Prabhava year - Panguni month –with Pushyam as his birth star - ( 1907) to Sri. U.Ve. Padmanabhachariar
and Komalavalli Devi. He was named as “Srinivasaraghavan”. He was fondly called by everybody as ‘Kannan
swami”. He stood as a paragon, gaining extensive knowledge in all the sastras. He also qualified for Sanskrit
Sironmani from Thiruvaiyaru Sanskrit college. Whenever Nammandavan and Engalandavan visited
Thirukkudanthai in their respective times, Sri Kannan Swami performed Kalakshepams on Adhyatma Sastras
under their lotus feet. H.H. was the greatest exponent of Sri Andal’s Tiruppavai, Srimath Ramayanam and Srimath
Bhagavatham. His Kalakshepams / Upanyasams on practically on all subjects, especially Sri Bhagavath Visayam,
captivated thousands over two generations cutting across the barriers of Sampradaayam. Great Vidwans travelled
with him on His Yatra to hear His Anugraha Bashanams and teachings. It simply mesmerized the listeners who
were always seeking more at the end of His upanyasams. As a parent, Swami performed his duties very well by
giving good education to his children and led his gruhastasrama in a blessed manner.
His Holiness took to ascetic order as H.H. Srimath Thirukkudanthai Andavan, the 9th Peetathipathi of our
Ashramam, on Subhaksri – Panguni – 23rd Magham – Shukla Dwadasi, on 5th April, 1963. Sri Kannan Swami
started on a Padayatra, immediately after ascending the Peetam, to all Divya Desams and other Kshetrams
throughout Bharatha Desam covering over 40,000 kms over the next 23 years. H.H. set up various Asramams in
places very far away from South India. During His time, Srimath Andavan Asramam grew leaps and bounds
throughout the country. This was truly a golden period in the annals of the Asramam. H.H. built temples at
Dombivli, Jayanagar, Neyveli, New Delhi, Desikan Sannathi at Srirangam, etc and built 2nd tier of the huge
Rajagopuram in Srirangam at the then cost of Rs.15 lakhs. Just before ascending the Peetam, H.H. started our
religious journal “Sri Ranganathan Paduka”. Today it has a circulation of almost 6,000 and is an authoritative
publication on Sri Vaishnavaite Philosophy. He started Sri Ranganatha Paduka Vidyalaya in 1967 at Kanchipuram
for the study of Vedas and Prabhandams. Today there are 10 Public Trusts run by the different centers of the
Asramam. During His reign, the Ashramam was itself recognized by the Central Government as a Public Religious
Charitable Trust under sec. 10.23.c(iv) of the Income-tax Act. H.H. established an Ayurvedic Dispensary in 1977,
today it is planned to be expanded into a college of Ayurveda.
H.H. started the annual “Paduka Vidwath Sadas” 40 years ago; it is today a ‘not to be missed’ annual event for the
Vidwans’. H.H.Srimath Thirukkudanthai Andavan observed 26 Chathurmasyams spanning 26 years from 1963 to
1989 and reached Thirunadu on Vibhava Varusham – Panguni Madham - Krishna Panjami day (10-04-1989) with a
message that His successor would fulfill His dreams and initiate many more projects that even He did not think of.
Prakritam Srimath Andavan, Sri Ranga Ramanuja Mahadesikan (Srimushnam Andavan) took to Holy Orders
on 1st June 1989. H.H. has built Ashramams in 15th centers over the past 18 years, has renovated almost all
Ashramams built by His Poorvacharyas, has on His own, built new / renovated the existing Temples including the
massive Rs.1.25 crore renovation of our Sri Balaji Mandir at Dombivli. The Temple consecrated by Srimath
Thirukkudanthai Andavan in the year 1982 is celebrating Silver Jubilee this year. The celebrations started with a
Maha Sudarshana Homam on Sri Sudarshana Jayanti is culminating now with the Thirunakshatram celebrations of
His Holiness. Earlier during the Birth Centenary Year of His Holiness, a Koti Sahasranama Archanai was
performed in the Temple. During this silver jubilee year, every month Upanyasams by renowned scholars were
conducted. Also, all Utsavams viz. Navaratri Utsavam, Annakoot Utsavam, Dhanur Masa Iraa Pathu/Pagal Pathu
Utsavams, Thayar Utsavam and Pratishtadina Brahmotsavam were conducted in a most befitting manner.
We are fortunate and blessed to be guided by Srimath Sri Srimushnam Andavan all the celebrations during the
year. It is very apt that H.H. wishes that the 102nd Thirunakshatram of Srimath Thirukkudanthai Andavan be
celebrated with great reverence and simplicity. The celebrations starts on 13th March, 2008, with daily Parayanams
(recitation) by more than 200 Vidwans from all over India, of Rig, Yajur, Sama Vedas, 4000 Divya Prabhandham,
Granta Parayanams and the most important Sri Paduka Sahasram. On the Panguni Pushyam day i.e. the Monday
the 17th of March, 2008 – the Thirunakshatram of Srimath Sri Thirukkudanthai Andavan, apart from Periya
Satrumurai there will be an Anugraha Bhashan of Prakritam Srimath Andavan. We are also planning to have
various cultural evenings with Bharata Natyam, Vocal Concerts, etc. at the Temple in the presence of H.H on all the
five days. More than 200 Vidwans from all over India and representatives from all branches of the Ashramam are
expected to participate in the celebrations. His Holiness desires that all sevarthis, regardless of their economic
status, should have access to the Blessings of the Poorvacharyas during these celebrations without exception. The
provisional expenses for the celebrations are estimated at Rs. 15 lakhs.
A colourful souvenir with important and informative articles together with Photographs of Divya Kshetrams,
Acharyas, will be released by His Holiness on this auspicious occasion.
All sishyas / devotees are requested to participate overwhelmingly in the Thirunakshatram Celebrations and be the
