First John 3:10-21
10. This is how God's children—and the
Devil's children—are made evident.
Whoever does not do what is right is
not of God, especially the one who
does not love his brother.
11. For this is the message you have
heard from the beginning: we should
love one another,
12. unlike Cain, who was of the evil one
and murdered his brother. And why did
he murder him? Because his works
were evil, and his brother's were
righteous.
13. Do not be surprised, brothers, if the
world hates you.
14. We know that we have passed from
death to life because we love our
brothers. The one who does not love
remains in death.
15. Everyone who hates his brother is a
murderer, and you know that no
murderer has eternal life residing in
him.
16. This is how we have come to know
love: He laid down His life for us. We
should also lay down our lives for our
brothers.
17. If anyone has this world's goods and
sees his brother in need but shuts off
his compassion from him—how can
God's love reside in him?
18. Little children, we must not love in
word or speech, but in deed and truth;
19. that is how we will know we are of the
truth, and will convince our hearts in
His presence,
20. because if our hearts condemn us,
God is greater than our hearts and
knows all things.
21. Dear friends, if our hearts do not
condemn us we have confidence
before God…
Seven Facts About Love
First John 3:10-21

1. Love is a Leading
Spiritual Indicator
• 3:14 “We know that we have
passed from death to life because
we love our brothers. The one who
does not love remains in death.”
conversely >
Hate is Murder
Without the Chalk Lines
• 3:15 “Everyone who hates his brother is a
murderer, and you know that no murderer
has eternal life residing in him.”
• 4:20 “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates
his brother, he is a liar. For the person who
does not love his brother whom he has seen
cannot love God whom he has not seen.”
.>
2. Love is Self-Sacrificing
• 3:16 “This is how we have come to
know love: He laid down His life for us.
We should also lay down our lives for
our brothers.”
• Self-sacrificing, not self-protecting
Q>
C. S. Lewis
To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything
and your heart will be wrung and possibly
broken. If you want to keep your heart intact,
you must give your heart to no one, not even to
an animal. Wrap it carefully around hobbies
and little luxuries… lock it up safe in… your
own selfishness… It will not be broken, it will
become unbreakable, impenetrable,
irredeemable… the only place outside of
heaven where you can be perfectly safe from
the dangers of love is hell!”

3. Love is Supernaturally
Empowered

him?”

3. Love is Supernaturally
Empowered
• 3:17 “….How can God's love reside in
him?”
• 4:7 “Dear friends, let us love one
another, because love is from God, and
everyone who loves has been born of
God and knows God.”

4. Love is Acting in the Best
Interest of the Other Person
• 3:18 “Little children, we must not love in
word or speech, but in deed and truth”
• Vs. 17 “If anyone has this world’s
goods and sees his brother in need but
shuts off his compassion from him—
how can God’s love reside in him?”

5. A Loving Heart is
a Reassured Heart
• 3:18-21 “Little children, we must not
love in word or speech, but in deed and
truth; that is how we will know we are of
the truth, and will convince our hearts
in His presence… Dear friends, if our
hearts do not condemn us we have
confidence before God”

6. Love is Not a Feeling to Feel,
But is a Command to Obey
• Vs. 23 “Now this is His command: that
we believe in the name of His Son
Jesus Christ, and love one another as
He commanded us.”

7. Only Loved People Can Love
• 4:9-10 “God’s love was revealed
among us in this way: God sent His
One and Only Son into the world so
that we might live through Him. Love
consists in this: not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His Son
to be the propitiation for our sins.”

• 4:19 “We love because He first loved
us.”
