La Salle and Fort St. Louis.
New Spain
 In 1682 friars founded the first permanent
settlement in Texas. It was called mission of
Corpus Christi de la Ysleta.
 It is located near El Paso.
 After the French landed in Texas, Spain
wanted to establish their presence In Texas.
 Besides missions, the Spanish built military
outposts called presidios and towns in lands
occupied by the Native Americans.
A Tejas Mission
In 1690, the second Spanish mission was built in
East Texas. It was called San Francisco de los
Tejas.
San Francisco de los Tejas did not last long.
Drought and disease forced the Spanish to
abandon their fort.
San Francisco
de los Tejas
 Between 1693 to 1714, Spain made no effort
to settle Texas.
 In 1699 Mission San Juan Bautista was build
close to Eagle Pass, Texas. Like many other
missions, it was strategically close to a river
for easy transportation.
Missions in East Texas
 In 1716, Spanish families
began moving to 6 established
missions in east Texas.
 A presidio named Nuestra
Senora de los Dolores de los
Tejas was erected to the
missions from attacks by
Native Americans and the
French.
San Antonio is Founded
 In need for a midway point between New
Spain and the new missions, the Spanish built
presidio San Antonio de Bexar in 1718.
 Across the San Antonio River, Mission San
Antonio de Valero was built. The mission
chapel is known as the Alamo.
Life in the Missions
 Spanish Friars in missions worked hard to
persuade natives to live close to missions.
 The natives that accepted mission life were
kept busy from dawn to dusk.
 Each day started with prayers, then religious
classes for kids.
 Women wove cloth, molded pottery, or
cooked.
 Men worked in the fields or learned carpentry
or blacksmithing.
 Large herds of cattle, sheep, and goats
guaranteed a regular meat and milk supply.
 Corn, beans, cantaloupes, cucumbers,
watermelons and peaches are few crops
grown in the San Antonio area.
Project
In groups of two you are going to create your own Spanishstyle mission and present it to the class. You will draw a
floor plan for your mission with all the necessary elements
(all the bold items described above). You may use the
description above & the diagram on page 121 of your
textbook. You will give your mission a name of your choice
& be as creative as you wish. Finally, write 1 paragraph
explaining the purpose of at least 4 of the elements of your
mission. Describe why you think all typical missions would
have had them.
Everyone will present their mission to the class and you will
vote decide whether you would live there or not.
