The International Breast Ultrasound School (IBUS)
was formed in 1991,
and IBUS is now in its 23rd year of providing
high quality breast ultrasound education
Since the beginnings in 1991, IBUS has achieved a great deal
and with the contributions of many colleagues
IBUS has become the leading international provider
of teaching programmes covering breast ultrasound
This is a great achievement when you reflect on
the resources at our disposal
Today IBUS is a recognized entity by the medical community
and industry throughout the world,
and teaching programmes have been held on all continents
where regular courses can be held
IBUS consists of an international faculty
which has developed into an
international family
The family has grown into more that 40 members,
and many today have formed close bonds
as a result of a common goal driven by dedication and enthusiasm
As a result, IBUS has acquired an international reputation
for providing education at the highest possible levels

How IBUS came about !
The formation of IBUS culminated from
discussions held between a group of “ultrasound” focused individuals
whose common goal was the teaching of ultrasound,
and who foresaw the need for better structured education in the
rapidly advancing specialty of breast imaging

Aims of IBUS
1. to improve the standards of breast ultrasound for assessing
the breast and its pathology,
2. to provide high-quality seminars and interactive workshops covering ultrasound,
X–ray mammography, magnetic resonance imaging and other investigative techniques,
3. to evaluate the role of conventional
and newer imaging techniques, and
4. to promote an international forum
for the exchange of scientific information
Scientific and clinical research meetings
were held from 1979 onwards
until 2003
These meetings were structured
to promote education, dissemination of information
and stimulate further research and development
The first meeting was held in Philadelphia in 1979, other meetings
followed in London (1981), Tokyo (1983), Sydney (1985), New Orleans (1987),
Paris (1989), Tokyo (1991), Heidelberg (1993), Indianapolis (1995), Lund (1997),
Seoul (1999), Venice (2001) and Kyoto (2003).
The International Association for Breast Ultrasound
was formed in 1991 in order to provide
an administrative framework for future meetings
With the acceptance of breast ultrasound
by the medical community,
the need for scientific meetings diminished
and more teaching programmes were required
IBUS brochures over the years
IBUS Guidelines
published in the European Journal of Ultrasound, March 1999
A number of training centers
were established in Europe
to provide high quality education
1. Ferrara, Italy
2. Zürich, Switzerland
3. Athens, Greece
These provide high quality teaching programmes
with uniform standards to satisfy international CME requirements
