The Evolution of El Paso’s
Public Hospital
1
Where It All Began
The first mention of a county hospital in El Paso was in the
early 1900’s in a local newspaper called The Herald. In
1902, County Hospital was located in a two-story building
on Smelter Road (today’s Paisano Street) at old Ft. Bliss.
2
New Location – New Name
The County hospital became El Paso General Hospital
when it moved east in 1915 to a new facility at 4815
Alameda, the site of today’s Thomason.
3
Hospital District Created
The El Paso County Hospital District was created in 1958 by
a vote of the people, who also approved a $3.7 million bond issue to
build a new hospital. The 335-bed facility opened in 1963.
4
Re-named: R.E. Thomason General Hospital
Robert Ewing Thomason was a distinguished El
Pasoan who supported the creation of a Hospital
District in El Paso.
He served our community as:
• Mayor
• State Representative
• Speaker of the Texas House
• U.S. Congressman
• U.S. District Court Judge
5
Accessible to All
Our Mission Then, Now and Forever
Our Mission is to enhance the health and wellness
of the El Paso community by making high-quality,
affordable healthcare services accessible to all.
Our tradition of respectful service is enriched by
our participation in healthcare related education,
research and innovation.
6
Academic Medicine
Texas Tech arrived in El Paso in 1973 and affiliated with
Thomason. Thomason became the University’s primary
teaching hospital, heralding the start of academic medicine
in our community.
7
Teaching Component Expands
Thomason has since affiliated with more than two dozen
universities, colleges and community colleges whose
students do their clinical training on our campus.
