Bellringer: Discuss examples of Irony in Act I such as Mercy Lewis.
The description in the stage directions of Mercy as “sly, fat, and
merciless” signals that she comes to pry rather than to offer
sympathy. Note that she reveals to Abigail when the two are alone
that she gave Ruth a good beating to try to wake her up. Miller
makes effective ironic use of her Christian name, “Mercy”. What is
ironic about Betty’s “flying to Mama” when she wakes up?

What type of irony is present?

List a few examples of the irony you identified in your composition
notebook.

Review character charts

Begin Act II


Review the characterization of the important figures in the play so
far: Samuel Parris, Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and John Hale.

Another critical character will be introduced at the beginning of Act
II: Elizabeth Proctor. Read the introductory scene carefully to note
Elizabeth’s significant character traits.
