Unit 2 Objectives
During this unit, all students will…
• Understand the five stages of the writing
process;
• Apply those stages to the five stages of
different types of writing.

Group Activity – Quiz Grade
• You will be working in groups to create a
poster of the five stages of the writing
process.
• Use pages 46-48 of your textbook.
• Brainstorm to develop a list of ways to show
the writing process visually.
• Create visual drafts of your topic.

• As a group, go over the drafts, revise them,
and edit them.
• Assemble your posters to display in the
classroom.
• Remember…decide WHO is doing WHAT!

I. The five stages of the writing process.
A. Prewriting is the stage you find and
explore ideas.
1. You decide on a topic to write about.
2. You decide on your audience.
3. You decide the overall purpose of your
writing.

B. Drafting is transforming your thoughts,
words, and phrases into sentences and
paragraphs.
C. Revising is looking at your writing to be sure
it is clear and organized.
1. Read what you wrote with a partner.
2. “Does it make sense?”
3. “Are my ideas in a sensible order?”

D. Editing/Proofreading focuses on the
mechanics of your writing.
1. Make sure words are spelled correctly.
2. Make sure punctuation is correct.
3. Make sure grammar is correct.
E. Publishing/Presenting is the last stage of
writing where you present your work to an
audience.

When writing…
• You need a source of
inspiration!
• Inspiration comes from
the Latin word
inspirare, which means
“breathing in.”
• How do sights, sounds,
and smells inspire
writers?
Group Activity
• In your groups, discuss the challenges you
have when writing.
• Suggest ways your classmates may be able to
approach the challenges.
• Write down three of the challenges and
solutions that others suggested.
Find a topic…
• Take some time to find a topic you would like
to write about.
• You will be working with this topic through a
series of lessons as you move through the
writing process.
