Out of Service Fiber Monitoring
Also called Dark Fiber monitoring
• One spare fiber required • Any wavelength can be used for test • No link modification required • Monitoring 1 fiber allows you to detect more than 80% of the cable faults • Most economical solution RTU

In Service Fiber Monitoring
Also called Active Fiber monitoring
• Every fiber can be monitored • All fibers can be used for traffic • Additional passive components required (WDM and filter) • Useful for very strategic links and no spare fiber is available RTU Wavelength Division Multiplexer l

RTU principles - OTDR monitoring
Our RTU (OTU-9500) will monitor fibers according to a cycle, switching from one fiber to another via an Optical Switch (OTAU).

Powerful OTDR remote measurement
Remote testing and measurement
• Multi-OTDR traces • Graphical functions : zoom, shift, ...
Available on :
ONMS Client, Web browser, Remotely with Laptop Locally with Laptop
• Automatic measurement • Splice, slope, reflectance and optical return loss • Both end measurement • Ghost detection ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA Page 10
Powerful OSA remote measurement
Available on :
ONMS Client, Web browser, Remotely with Laptop Locally with Laptop
• Automatic measurements on the entire spectrum • Frequency, • Power level, • SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio), • Composite Power • Manual measurement for Total power, gain tilt and slope ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA Page 11
ONMS Domains Segmentation
ONMS offers to manage different domains to best fit your needs
Information may be organized geographically or functionally -> Flexible resources administration Information may be filtered for End-User customers -> Helpful & competition selling point for SLA contracts Search engine for tunable filtering -> Fastest & easiest access to information Page 12 ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA
Network documentation - OFM option

OFM Option - Much more than a GIS !
OSP documentation for full cable documentation capacity
Skip other OSP information Comprehensive Physical Network documentation:
• buildings, • ODF description, • Cables route, • manholes, • connectors, • splices, • slacks, ... • Customer information : leased fiber • GIS compatibility (Map Info, others read only) ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA Page 14
Performance trends & Pro active maintenance
Performance Trend & pro-active maintenance
Detect defaults before they affect the Bit Error Ratio.
Monitor the physical layer Monitor with OTDR a representative fiber of a cable and check : Total attenuation, connectors reflectance, splices...
Analyze trends over time Organize pro-active maintenance campaigns on specific fibers and regularly store OTDR results for analysis : Total attenuation, connectors reflectance, splices...
Regularly check the photonic layer Monitor each Wavelength on DWDM networks and check : Channel drifting, Power level, SNR, Composite Power, Total power, gain tilt, slope...

Alarm Management
In case of Alarm from a RTU, it is very critical that the right person is alerted as quickly as possible.
ONMS offers a very powerful Alarm Management : E-mail Fax Pager .
Other..
• Pop up Alarm Window on client • On Duty Management (Option) • Trouble ticket • OSS Interface • Alarm History • Local alarms at RTU location, redundancy of communications...

OSS Interface
SNMP is the preferred interface to exchange information with OSS Thanks to this interface, the OSS may : • Have a complete view of ONMS database • Receive alarm information automatically as soon as faults occur • Acknowledge alarms directly • Launch a test on demand • Correlate this information with other systems ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA OSS : Operation support system (supervisor of supervisors) Page 19

Web client
Acterna ONMS web client is a “
Thin client
” ->
Special GUI
with
Web feel and look
-> Accessible via
any Web browser
(Netscape, Internet Explorer…, Windows, Unix, Linux…) ->
No need to pre-install
anything -> No maintenance or upgrade ->
Limited amount
of data to
download
(specially designed to optimize data download) ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA Page 22
Web Client functional overview
Extensive functions including :
• Alarm monitoring • Event details for each alarm • Test and/or measurement on demand • Trace & spectrum analysis tools • Domain segmentation (restricted access) • Report generation Secured Access through INTRANET / VPN ONMS 4.0 presentation - ACTERNA Page 23
Reports generation
Reports, Quality of Service...
Quality of Service Reports
• MTTR : shows the mean time it takes to repair common faults. • used to analyze the effectiveness of the maintenance program • used as a sales tool to show how quickly faults are repaired.
Alarm reports HTML dynamically generated !
Customized reports
Useful information including maps, optical events table, schematic and OTDR trace
OSP Reports
* Other reports available for OSP/GIS : • Customer/Equipment report • Termination assignment report • Installed materials & hardware report • Span assignments reports • Work order report • Geographic reports • ...
