Q. Compare and contrast “The Earth on Turtle’s Back” and “When
Grizzlies Walked Upright”.
A. They both have animal characters, are Native American origin
myths where animals create the world, discuss a connection to
the Great Spirit in the sky, and have similarities in plots: both
have a woman character who falls into a new realm so to speak.
They differ in the following ways: “The Earth on Turtle’s Back”
has a Muskrat and a turtle who make it possible for land to form
on earth and humans to live there, whereas “When Grizzlies
Walked Upright” tells the story of how the Native American race
is formed by the marriage of a human and a bear.
Q. If you were absent yesterday, connect “When Grizzlies Walked
Upright” with the Christian creation story.
A. These two stories account for the creation of mankind, but the
Native American story accounts for creation of a new race, the
Native Americans, whereas, the Christian story accounts for the
creation of the human race.
