“FROM THE HISTORY OF OLYMPYC GAMES”
DONE BY ALEXANDRA MASLOVA
SCHOOL № 5, SUVOROV
(Teacher: Pokhvalitova E.V. )
«THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES IS NOT TO WIN, BUT TO TAKE PART,
JUST AS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN LIFE IS NOT THE TRIUMPH BUT THE STRUGGLE. THE
ESSENTIAL THING IS NOT TO HAVE CONQUERED BUT TO HAVE FOUGHT WELLL.»
Pierre De Coubertin
The world's greatest international sports games are known as the Olympic Games.
The Olympic Games have a very long history. They began in 777 BC in Greece and took place every four
years for nearly twelve centuries at Olimpia.
Ancient Olympia is the cradle of the Olympic Games in Greece.
The games were held in honour of Zeus
Zeus was the “Father of Gods and men” who ruled Olympians of Mount Olympus as a father ruled the
family. He was the God of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. His servants were Power, Strength and
Victory. The major center where all Greeks converged to pay honor to their chief God was Olympia.
Their quadrennial festival featured the famous Games.
They included many different kinds of sports.
RUNNING
BOXING
WRESTLING
In 1894, a Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, addressed all the sports governing bodies and pointed
out the significance of sports and its educational value. Two years later the first modern Olympic Games
took place. Of course, the competitions were held in Greece to symbolize the continuation of the centuriesold tradition.
In 1896 the International Olympic Committee was set up. It is the central policy-making body of the
Olympic movement. It is formed by the representatives of all countries which take part in the Olympic
Games. The International Olympic Committee decides upon the programme of the games, the number of
the participants and the city-host for the Games. Over one hundred and fifty countries are represented in
the International Olympic Committee now. Besides, each country has its National Olympic Committee.
The Olympic idea means friendship, fraternity and cooperation among the people of the world. The
Olympic Movement proves that real peace can be achieved through sport.
The Olympic emblem is five interlinked rings: blue, yellow, black, green and red. Any national flag
contains at least one of these colours.
Summer and Winter Games are held separately. There are always several cities wishing to host the
Games. The most suitable is selected by the International Committee. After that the city of the Games
starts preparations for the competitions, constructs new sports facilities, stadiums, hotels, press centres.
Thousands of athletes, journalists and guests come to the Games, and it takes great efforts to arrange
everything. There is always an interesting cultural programme of concerts, exhibitions, festivals, etc., for
each Games.
In 1980 Moscow hosted the Twenty- Second Olympic Games.
It was a great event!
There were different kinds of sport.
The symbol of the Olympic Games in Moscow was a brown bear. All people loved it!

The construction of sports complexes in Russia will give a powerful incentive for further sports
development. It is generally known that nation which invests in sport increases levels of health, thus
saving money on future treatment.

The Olympic Oath
The athlete, from the team of the organizing country, holds a corner of the Olympic
Flag while reciting the oath:
In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic
Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to
a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the
glory of sport and the honour of our teams.
One of the most famous Olympic traditions is lighting the Olympic flame.
It is brought from Greece to the capital of the Games
