CAPS
• The mission of the Center for AIDS
Prevention Studies (CAPS) is to conduct
domestic and international research to
prevent the acquisition of HIV and to
optimize health outcomes among HIVinfected individuals.
CAPS Community Advisory Board
• Established in 2000.
• The CAPS CAB consists of 8-12 community
stakeholders who attend quarterly meetings of the
board. CAB members are selected to represent a
variety of agencies and populations throughout the San
Francisco Bay Area.
• The goal of the CAPS CAB is to maintain a channel for
community input into CAPS' research agenda, provide
information about new community trends, concerns,
and resources, and to assist CAPS to develop effective
methods for reaching community stakeholders with our
HIV prevention science.
CAPS/CAB projects
• Developing “Recommendations for
Research Dissemination”
• Developing Innovative Grants program
• Attending CAPS peer reviews
• Helping guide the CAPS Conference
• Providing feedback for CAPS studies that
do not have their own CABs

Dissemination Guidelines
1.
Create a dissemination plan for all studies.
–
–
–
–
–
Include dissemination plan in grants.
Develop a budget that supports dissemination
efforts.
Develop a timeline for dissemination efforts.
Get input from study participants and community
representatives on the best methods to
disseminate research findings.
Make research results accessible to various
audiences through CAPS resources such as
website, Research Portfolio, Newsletter, Science to
Community reports, CAPS Conference.
Dissemination Guidelines
2. Disseminate research progress and
findings to study participants.
3. Disseminate research progress and
findings to agencies and service
providers.
4. Disseminate research findings to
community.
5. Disseminate research findings to
policymakers.
Dissemination Guidelines
To assist researchers, includes:
•
•
•
•
Sample grant language for dissemination plan
Guidelines for dissemination plan/timeline
Ideas for involving participants in dissemination
Local and national HIV/AIDS conferences,
publications and websites used by service
providers
• Kinds of research data to be disseminated
• Examples of effective dissemination
Conclusions
• Many researchers at CAPS are
disseminating research in timely and
community-friendly ways.
• Barriers cited by researchers include: lack
of time and money, little consideration of
non-traditional dissemination during
faculty promotions, government funders’
restrictions on publishing, and lack of
knowledge regarding dissemination to
communities.
Conclusions, cont’d
• While acknowledging these concerns, the
CAPS CAB agreed that researchers
should adhere to some minimum
requirements for dissemination.
