TEA Best Practices Clearinghouse
 The Best Practices Clearinghouse is a
collection of best practices for use by
schools and the general public.
 The Clearinghouse launched on the TEA
Website, January 31, 2008.
 Best practice contributions are currently
being accepted.
 The deadline to submit a best practice
based on the 2007 rating is May 30, 2008.
Basic Requirements
 Campuses, districts and charter schools
must be rated Exemplary or Recognized.
 Positive change must be associated with
the practice in one of the statutory topic
areas.
 Instruction, dropout prevention, business
management, and finance and resource
allocation
Basic Requirements
 The school must be able to describe site-
specific strategies and procedures for
implementation of the practice.

ELA-Reading TEKS Revision
 StandardsWork was hired as the
facilitator for the ELA/R process in
November 2007.
 All work previously done by the
committee members, expert content
reviewers, and Coalition were
forwarded to StandardsWork in
November 2007.
ELA-Reading TEKS Revision
 StandardsWork conducted phone
conferences with educator committee
members to gather feedback on the
process during December 2007.
 Educator committee members met in
Austin January 4 – 5, 2008 with
facilitators from StandardsWork.
ELA-Reading TEKS Revision
 StandardsWork compiled the input
from the January meetings and sent
the revised document to the
committee members for further input.
 StandardsWork submitted documents
to the Texas Education Agency on
January 21st.
ELA-Reading TEKS Revision
 The SBOE met February 13th to approve
proposed revisions for first reading and
filing authorization.
 A motion was passed to establish a
subcommittee of the board to select
experts to review the document and
establish the process for revisions.
 The subcommittee members include:





 The SBOE instructed StandardsWork
to use the draft presented to the SBOE
at the February 13th meeting as well as
“input from all interested parties
including members of the existing
work groups to complete the final
standards document”.
 The subcommittee met on February
29th in Austin to select the expert
reviewers from an SBOE-nominated
list.

 At the February 29th meeting, the
subcommittee nominated the following
experts to be contacted to review the
ELA/Reading documents: Dr. David
Chard, Dr. Barbara Foorman, Dr. Reid
Lyon, Dr. Sandra Stotsky, Dr. Paige
Furgerson, Dr. Alfred Tatum, Dr.
Gladys Kolenovsky, Dr. Katherine
Escamilla, Dr. Louisa Moats, Dr, Jose
A. Ruiz-Escalante, and Dr. Judith
Wallis.
ELA-Reading TEKS Revision
 Based on availability the six experts
who reviewed the documents were: Dr.
Foorman, Dr. Chard, Dr. Stotsky, Dr.
Tatum, Dr. Furgerson, and Karen Avrit.
 Reviewers attended an onsite meeting
March 13th – 14th at SMU with the
facilitator from StandardsWork.
 Subcommittee met on March 14th in
Dallas to hear a report from the
facilitator from StandardsWork.

 Agency received and posted the
StandardsWork draft ELA/Reading
TEKS March 19th.
 The subcommittee met on March
19th and took no action.
 A public hearing was held March
26th where the SBOE heard
testimony from over 60 speakers.

 A special meeting of the
subcommittee was scheduled for
March 27th prior to the regular board
meeting.
 The subcommittee “signed” off on
the document and forwarded it to
the full board for consideration.

 March 27th-28th SBOE met for first
reading and filing authorization.
 A motion was approved "...to adopt
the StandardsWork document without
the imbedded author and title list,
and direct our facilitator to work with
the yellow document and teacher
work groups including Hispanic
experts as requested by Mrs.
Berlanga...“.

 The March 28th draft will be posted
on April 18th at
http://www.sos.state.tx.us/texreg/.
 The public comment period opens on
April 18th.
 Onsite meetings with educator
committee members are scheduled
for May 2nd – 3rd (6th – 12th grade)
and May 5th - 6th (K – 6th) in Austin.

 StandardsWork will submit revised TEKS
documents to TEA May 14th to prepare for
second reading.
 The May 22nd-23rd SBOE meeting is
slated for second reading and final
adoption of the TEKS.
 Implementation date of TEKS is 2009 –
2010 as noted on the approved rule text
document of March 28th.

 Proclamation 2010 will be amended
and Proclamation 2011 will be issued
at the May 2008 SBOE meeting
 Professional development will be
planned for the 2009-10 school year.
