A brief history of UOIT

UOIT’s seven faculties and Office of Graduate Studies
offer 68 programs overall, many of which
are unique in Ontario and Canada;

Comprehensive university, offering

master’s level degrees) and doctoral
degrees (7 PhD programs);
•
First university in Ontario to be
laptop-based;

Full-time enrolment has grown to 7,400 (413 graduate students); and

International Students

Substantial growth in international student population
since inception: students from more than 65 countries have
made UOIT their post-secondary studies destination since the
university opened in 2003.

Proposed areas of co-operation can include: research
collaboration, faculty and student mobility, 2 + 2 degrees; and
•
More than 15 agreements with institutions in Asia, Europe,
Caribbean and Latin America.

Faculty of Business and Information Technology
•
Dr. Carolyn McGregor, Canada Research Chair in Health Informatics, is collaborating with
universities and hospitals in other countries, including China and Australia, for the Artemis
Project. Dr. McGregor’s research could help save the lives of critically-ill newborns around the
world.
• The faculty offers International study opportunities through the:
• Summer Study Abroad Program; and
• Ontario Global Edge Program.
•
Dr. Patrick Hung, in collaboration with former faculty member,
Dr. Jay Tashiro, established a research and development company
at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. Their work in
Hong Kong integrates theories of cognition and theories of health
behaviour, using research and development for e-Health outreach.

Digital resources for students include use of Interactive Whiteboard
technologies such as SMART Boards;
Graduates teach not only in Ontario and Canada, but also help meet the
demand for teachers in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia
and other countries;
Developing plan to offer English for Academic Purposes program
to 200 students at school outside of Shanghai (some of these students
would later come to study at UOIT); and
Potential offering of professional
development courses to teachers
(Teaching English as a Second

Dr. Igor Pioro is working with Chinese researchers on supercritical fluid
reactors (Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chinese Nuclear Society);
Future collaboration with Nuclear Power Institute and Xi’an
Jiaotong University;

along with eight students
represented UOIT at the
18th International Conference
on Nuclear Engineering
(ICONE) in May 2010; and
2 + 2 Agreements with three
Indian universities.
Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

Dr. Dan Zhang, collaborating with Yunjian Ge
(Chinese Academy of Sciences) on the Basic
Theory and Key Technology of Marmot-like
Robotics for Mine Safety Detection and
Rescuing; and
UOIT Automotive Engineering students among
elite group of 16 universities in North America
competing in EcoCAR and EcoCAR2, a vehicle
design competition sponsored by General
Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy.
Faculty of Health Sciences
UOIT’s Bachelor of Health Science in Medical Laboratory Science is the
first of its kind in Ontario;
• Dr. Ellen Vogel has assumed a lead role in a study examining nutrition
policy in Canada, Costa Rica and Brazil (in collaboration with the Public
Health Agency of Canada and the Pan American Health Organization);
• Programs in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Health Sciences
including Kinesiology, Health Information Management and Fitness and
Health Promotion;
• Faculty offers graduate courses in Health Informatics and Community
Health.

Dr. Nawal Ammar, dean, presented at United Nations Headquarters in New
York as part of Buddhist-Muslim dialogue series, an event that coincided
with the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
Faculty research work has influenced policy reports by such organizations as
the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly,
the United Nations and the World Health Organization; and
Research grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice, IBM,
the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Ontario Victim Services
Secretariat, the U.S. Department of State, among others.
