“In the Old Testament, Genesis is the
book of books—a divine account
whose worth cannot be measured.
Exodus and Deuteronomy are also of
surpassing worth. Numbers, Joshua,
Judges, the Samuels, the Kings, and
the Chronicles are all essential history,
interwoven with deeds of faith and
wonder that form a background for an
understanding of the Christian faith.
Leviticus has no special application to
us and, except for a few passages,
need not give us permanent concern.
Ruth and Esther are lovely stories that
are part of our heritage.

“The Psalms contain marvelous poetry,
and the portions that are messianic and
that speak of the last days and the
Second Coming are of great import.
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and
Lamentations are interesting books;
Job is for people who like the book of
Job; and the Song of Solomon is
biblical trash—it is not inspired
writing. Ezra, Nehemiah, Obadiah, and
Jonah are the least of the prophets; and
all the rest of the prophets—Isaiah
above them all—each in his place and
order set forth the doctrinal and
prophetic word that must be studied in
depth.”

Old Testament
Why is it called the
“Old” Testament?
“Bible,” Bible Dictionary, p. 622
“In the Old Testament the word testament
represents a Hebrew word meaning
‘covenant.’ The Old Covenant is the law that
was given to Moses. The New Covenant is
the gospel of Jesus Christ…. When the
Savior came in the meridian of time, He
restored the gospel to the Jews in Palestine.
Since they had strayed, even from the law of
Moses, it was a new covenant to them. Thus
we have the record called the Old and the
New Testaments.”
Jeffrey R. Holland
Quorum of the Twelve
(Christ and the New
Covenant, p. 7-8)
“To help his sons and daughters
remember their promises to him—and
certainly to help them remember his
promises to them—God has directed that
the nature and significance of those
covenants be recorded. In that process,
the texts and documents preserving such
promises have also been called
‘covenants.’ In fact, the words
testament and covenant are virtually
synonymous in their theological usage….
Thus, the Old and New Testaments, as
we commonly refer to them, are written
testimonies or witnesses … of the
covenants between God and man in
various dispensations.”

Genesis—technically a pre-Old Testament text—teaches
us what the covenant is and who the covenant family
members are.
The Old Covenant = Mosaic Covenant = Law of Moses
The purpose of the Mosaic Covenant was to be a
“schoolmaster” (Gal. 3:24) to bring God’s people to
Christ and prepare them for the New and Everlasting
Covenant.

The New Testament = The New Covenant
• Christ is “the messenger of the covenant” (Mal. 3:1)
• Christ is “the mediator of the new covenant” (Heb.
12:24; D&C 76:69).
• “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the
prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.”
(Matthew 5:17)
• The New Testament records Christ’s fulfillment of
His part of the Covenant (Galatians 3:16).
“For this is my blood of the new testament,
which is shed for many for the remission of
sins.” (Matthew 26:28)
Joseph Smith
President
(History of the
Church, 1:313-315)
“Christ, in the days of His flesh,
proposed to make a covenant with
[Israel], but they rejected Him and His
proposals, and in consequence thereof,
they were broken off, and no covenant
was made with them at that time….
Thus after this chosen family had
rejected Christ and His proposals, the
heralds of salvation said to them, "Lo,
we turn unto the Gentiles;" and the
Gentiles received the covenant, and
were grafted in from whence the
chosen family were broken off.”

“… the Gentiles have not continued in
the goodness of God, but have
departed from the faith that was once
delivered to the Saints, and have
broken the covenant in which their
fathers were established (see Isaiah
24:5); and have become high-minded,
and have not feared; therefore, but few
of them will be gathered with the
chosen family.”
