Bruce R. McConkie Quorum of the Twelve (CES Symposium on the New Testament, 17 August 1984) “In the Old Testament, Genesis is the book of books—a divine account whose worth cannot be measured. Exodus and Deuteronomy are also of surpassing worth. Numbers, Joshua, Judges, the Samuels, the Kings, and the Chronicles are all essential history, interwoven with deeds of faith and wonder that form a background for an understanding of the Christian faith. Leviticus has no special application to us and, except for a few passages, need not give us permanent concern. Ruth and Esther are lovely stories that are part of our heritage. Bruce R. McConkie Quorum of the Twelve (CES Symposium on the New Testament, 17 August 1984) “The Psalms contain marvelous poetry, and the portions that are messianic and that speak of the last days and the Second Coming are of great import. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Lamentations are interesting books; Job is for people who like the book of Job; and the Song of Solomon is biblical trash—it is not inspired writing. Ezra, Nehemiah, Obadiah, and Jonah are the least of the prophets; and all the rest of the prophets—Isaiah above them all—each in his place and order set forth the doctrinal and prophetic word that must be studied in depth.” The Old Testament: A Divine Library The Law The 5 Books of Moses Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy The History Joshua Judges Ruth 1 Samuel 2 Samuel 1 Kings 2 Kings 1 Chronicles 2 Chronicles Ezra Nehemiah Esther Poetry & Wisdom Job Psalms Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon The Prophets Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekiel Daniel Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi Chronological Order of the Old Testament Job? • Proverbs • Ecclesiastes. • Song of Sol. • 2 Chronicles Ruth Gen.-Josh. The New Covenant is the gospel of Jesus Christ…. When the Savior came in the meridian of time, He restored the gospel to the Jews in Palestine. Since they had strayed, even from the law of Moses, it was a new covenant to them. Thus we have the record called the Old and the New Testaments.” Jeffrey R. Holland Quorum of the Twelve (Christ and the New Covenant, p. 7-8) “To help his sons and daughters remember their promises to him—and certainly to help them remember his promises to them—God has directed that the nature and significance of those covenants be recorded. In that process, the texts and documents preserving such promises have also been called ‘covenants.’ In fact, the words testament and covenant are virtually synonymous in their theological usage…. Thus, the Old and New Testaments, as we commonly refer to them, are written testimonies or witnesses … of the covenants between God and man in various dispensations.” Testament = Covenant The Old Testament = The Old Covenant The New Testament = The New Covenant Book of Mormon = Another Covenant D&C = The Doctrine & Covenants of the Church Abrahamic Covenant Summary The Overarching Covenant Covenant Element Mortal Promise Eternal Promise 1. The Old Covenant = Mosaic Covenant = Law of Moses The purpose of the Mosaic Covenant was to be a “schoolmaster” (Gal. 3:24) to bring God’s people to Christ and prepare them for the New and Everlasting Covenant. Thus after this chosen family had rejected Christ and His proposals, the heralds of salvation said to them, "Lo, we turn unto the Gentiles;" and the Gentiles received the covenant, and were grafted in from whence the chosen family were broken off.” The Everlasting Covenant The New Covenant (Jews Reject; Gentiles Receive) (Gospel Fulness) Adam Enoch Noah Abraham Moses N.T.
