Matthew
Chapter 27
(1 Cor 15:1-4) 1Moreover, brethren, I
declare unto you the gospel which I
preached unto you, which also ye have
received, and wherein ye stand; 2By
which also ye are saved, if ye keep in
memory what I preached unto you,
unless ye have believed in vain. 3For I
delivered unto you first of all that which
I also received, how that Christ died for
our sins according to the scriptures;
4And that he was buried, and that he
rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
Matthew 27:1
When the morning was come,
all the chief priests and elders
of the people took counsel
against Jesus to put him to
death:
Matthew 27:2
And when they had bound
him, they led him away, and
delivered him to Pontius
Pilate the governor.
Genesis 49:10
The sceptre shall not depart
from Judah, nor a lawgiver
from between his feet, until
Shiloh come; and unto him
shall the gathering of the
people be.
The Sceptre Departed
• Herod Archelaus was replaced by a Roman
procurator named Caponius.
• The legal power of the Sanhedrin was
immediately restricted and the adjudication
of capital cases was lost.
• This was normal Roman policy.

The Jerusalem Talmud, Sanhedrin folio 24
The Sceptre Departed
• When the members of the Sanhedrin found
themselves deprived of their right over life
and death, they covered their heads with
ashes and their bodies with sackcloth, and
bemoaned.
- “Woe unto us for the scepter has departed
from Judah and the Messiah has not come!”
Babylonian Talmud Ch.4 folio 37
Pontius Pilate
• Pontius Pilate served as 6th Roman
procurator of Judaea from A.D. 26 to
A.D. 36, after which he was recalled to
Rome and then passed out of official history.
• He was hated by the orthodox Jews and
never really understood them.
• A plaque was found in Caesarea bearing his
name which is now in the Israel Museum.
Pontius Pilate
• Ruled Judea in a reckless and arbitrary
fashion.
• In A.D. 36, he was deposed by Vitellius and
sent to Rome, tried under Caligula.
• Tradition: Pilate killed himself
Josephus Ant. 18:4, sec. 1,2;
Eusebius Historia Ecclesiastica II, ii. 7
• The Coptic church came to believe that he
became a Christian.
Matthew 27:3
Then Judas, which had
betrayed him, when he saw
that he was condemned,
repented himself, and brought
again the thirty pieces of
silver to the chief priests and
elders,
Matthew 27:4
Saying, I have
sinned in that I
have betrayed
the innocent
blood. And they
said, What is
that to us? see
thou to that.

Matthew 27:5
And he cast
down the pieces
of silver in the
temple, and
departed, and
went and
hanged himself.
Matthew 27:6
And the chief priests took the
silver pieces, and said, It is
not lawful for to put them
into the treasury, because it
is the price of blood.
Matthew 27:7-8
7And
they took
counsel, and
bought with them
the potter’s field,
to bury strangers
in. 8Wherefore
that field was
called, The field of
blood, unto this
day.
Matthew 27:9-10
9Then
was fulfilled that which was
spoken by Jeremy the prophet,
saying, And they took the thirty
pieces of silver, the price of him
that was valued, whom they of the
children of Israel did value; 10And
gave them for the potter’s field, as
the Lord appointed me.
Acts 1:18-19
18Now
this man purchased a field
with the reward of iniquity; and
falling headlong, he burst asunder
in the midst, and all his bowels
gushed out. 19And it was known
unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem;
insomuch as that field is called in
their proper tongue, Aceldama,
that is to say, The field of blood.
Zechariah 11:12-13
12And
I said unto them, If ye think
good, give me my price; and if not,
forbear. So they weighed for my
price thirty pieces of silver. 13And
the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto
the potter: a goodly price that I was
prised at of them. And I took the
thirty pieces of silver, and cast them
to the potter in the house of the
LORD.

Matthew 27:11
And Jesus stood before the
governor: and the governor
asked him, saying, Art thou the
King of the Jews? And Jesus said
unto him, Thou sayest.
Matthew 27:12
And when he was accused of
the chief priests and elders, he
answered nothing.
Matthew 27:13-14
13Then
said Pilate unto him,
Hearest thou not how many
things they witness against thee?
14And he answered him to never
a word; insomuch that the
governor marvelled greatly.
Isaiah 53:7
He was oppressed, and he was
afflicted, yet he opened not his
mouth: he is brought as a lamb to
the slaughter, and as a sheep
before her shearers is dumb, so
he openeth not his mouth.
Matthew 27:15-16
15Now
at that feast the
governor was wont to release
unto the people a prisoner,
whom they would. 16And they
had then a notable prisoner,
called Barabbas.
Matthew 27:17-18
17Therefore
when they were
gathered together, Pilate said
unto them, Whom will ye that I
release unto you? Barabbas, or
Jesus which is called Christ? 18For
he knew that for envy they had
delivered him.
Matthew 27:19
When he was set down on the
judgment seat, his wife sent unto
him, saying, Have thou nothing
to do with that just man: for I
have suffered many things this
day in a dream because of him.

Noah (Genesis 6:9)
Joseph (Matthew 1:19)
Jesus (Matthew 27:19; Acts 22:14)
John the Baptist (Mark 6:20)
Simeon (Luke 2:25)
Joseph of Arimathaea (Luke 23:50-51)
Cornelius (Acts 10:22)
Lot (2 Peter 2:7)
Matthew 27:20
But the chief priests and elders
persuaded the multitude that
they should ask Barabbas, and
destroy Jesus.
Matthew 27:21-22
21The
governor answered and said
unto them, Whether of the twain
will ye that I release unto you?
They said, Barabbas. 22Pilate saith
unto them, What shall I do then
with Jesus which is called Christ?
They all say unto him, Let him be
crucified.
Matthew 27:23
And the
governor said,
Why, what
evil hath he
done? But they
cried out the
more, saying,
Let him be
crucified.
Matthew 27:24
When Pilate saw that he could
prevail nothing, but that rather
a tumult was made, he took
water, and washed his hands
before the multitude, saying, I
am innocent of the blood of this
just person: see ye to it.
Barabbas
• He stood under the righteous
condemnation of the law.
• He knew the One who was to take his
cross and take his place was innocent.
• He knew that Jesus Christ was for him a
true substitute.
• He knew that he had done nothing to
merit going free while another took his
place
Changing Places
The murderer’s
- bonds,
- curse,
- disgrace, and
- mortal agony
- were transferred
to the righteous
Jesus;
While the
- liberty,
- innocence,
- safety, and
- well-being
- of the Nazarene
became the lot
of the murderer.
Mutual Exchange of Positions
• Barabbas is installed in all the rights and
privileges of Jesus Christ;
• while the latter enters upon all the infamy
and horror of the rebel’s position.
• The delinquent’s guilt and cross become
the lot of the Just One, and
• all the civil rights and immunities of the
later are now the property of the
delinquent.
Where are You and I?
….. In Barabbas’ shoes!
Matthew 27:25
Then
answered
all the
people, and
said, His
blood be on
us, and
on our
children.
Matthew 27:26
Then released he Barabbas
unto them: and when he had
scourged Jesus, he delivered
him to be crucified.

Matthew 27:27-28
27Then
the soldiers of the
governor took Jesus into the
common hall, and gathered
unto him the whole band of
soldiers. 28And they stripped
him, and put on him a scarlet
robe.
Matthew 27:29-30
29And
when they had platted a
crown of thorns, they put it upon
his head, and a reed in his right
hand: and they bowed the knee
before him, and mocked him,
saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30And they spit upon him, and
took the reed, and smote him on
the head.
Isaiah 50:6
I gave my back to the smiters,
and my cheeks to them that
plucked off the hair: I hid not
my face from shame and
spitting.
Matthew 27:31-32
31And
after that they had mocked
him, they took the robe off from
him, and put his own raiment on
him, and led him away to crucify
him. 32And as they came out, they
found a man of Cyrene, Simon by
name: him they compelled to bear
his cross.
Matthew 27:33-34
33And
when they were come
unto a place called Golgotha,
that is to say, a place of a skull,
34They gave him vinegar to
drink mingled with gall: and
when he had tasted thereof, he
would not drink.

Tradition has it that the
head of Goliath was brought
back to Jerusalem by David
and given to Saul, and they
buried it at Golgotha

woman, and between thy
seed and her seed; it shall
bruise thy head, and thou
shalt bruise his heel.

Matthew 27:35
And they crucified him, and
parted his garments, casting
lots: that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the
prophet, They parted my
garments among them, and
upon my vesture did they cast
lots.
Psalm 22:18
They part my garments
among them, and cast lots
upon my vesture.
Matthew 27:36-37
36And
sitting down they
watched him there; 37And set
up over his head his accusation
written, THIS IS JESUS THE
KING OF THE JEWS.
John 19:21-22
21Then
said the chief priests of
the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The
King of the Jews; but that he
said, I am King of the Jews.
22Pilate answered, What I have
written I have written.
“What I have written will always
remain written.”

Matthew 27:38-40
38Then
were there two thieves
crucified with him, one on the right
hand, and another on the left. 39And
they that passed by reviled him,
wagging their heads, 40And saying,
Thou that destroyest the temple,
and buildest it in three days, save
thyself. If thou be the Son of God,
come down from the cross.
Matthew 27:41-42
41Likewise
also the chief priests
mocking him, with the scribes and
elders, said, 42He saved others;
himself he cannot save. If he be
the King of Israel, let him now
come down from the cross, and we
will believe him.
Matthew 27:43-44
43He
trusted in God; let him
deliver him now, if he will have
him: for he said, I am the Son of
God. 44The thieves also, which
were crucified with him, cast the
same in his teeth.
Matthew 27:45
Now
from the
sixth hour
there was
darkness
over all
the land
unto the
ninth
hour.
Matthew 27:46
And about the ninth hour Jesus
cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that
is to say, My God, my God, why
hast thou forsaken me?
Matthew 27:47-49
47Some
of them that stood there,
when they heard that, said, This
man calleth for Elias. 48And
straightway one of them ran, and
took a sponge, and filled it with
vinegar, and put it on a reed, and
gave him to drink. 49The rest said,
Let be, let us see whether Elias will
come to save him.
Matthew 27:50
Jesus, when he
had cried again
with a loud voice,
yielded up the
ghost.
Matthew 27:51
And, behold,
the veil of the
temple was
rent in twain
from the top to
the bottom;
and the earth
did quake, and
the rocks rent;
Matthew 27:52-53
52And
the graves were opened;
and many bodies of the saints
which slept arose, 53And came
out of the graves after his
resurrection, and went into the
holy city, and appeared unto
many.
Matthew 27:54
Now when the centurion, and
they that were with him,
watching Jesus, saw the
earthquake, and those things
that were done, they feared
greatly, saying, Truly this was
the Son of God.
Matthew 27:55-56
55And
many women were there
beholding afar off, which
followed Jesus from Galilee,
ministering unto him: 56Among
which was Mary Magdalene,
and Mary the mother of James
and Joses, and the mother of
Zebedee’s children.
Marys in the Bible
1. MARY the Virgin, wife of JOSEPH.
2. MARY SALOME, her sister, wife of
Cleopas, John 19:25.
3. MARY MAGDALENE, or MARY of
Magdala; and,
4. MARY, the sister of Martha and
Lazarus, John 11:1.
Matthew 27:57
When the even was come, there
came a rich man of Arimathaea,
named Joseph, who also himself
was Jesus’ disciple:
Isaiah 53:9
And he made his grave with
the wicked, and with the rich
in his death; because he had
done no violence, neither was
any deceit in his mouth.
Matthew 27:58
He went to
Pilate, and
begged the body
of Jesus. Then
Pilate
commanded the
body to be
delivered.
Matthew 27:59
And when Joseph had taken the
body, he wrapped it in a clean
linen cloth,
Matthew 27:60
And laid it in his own new tomb,
which he had hewn out in the
rock: and he rolled a great stone
to the door of the sepulchre, and
departed.
Matthew 27:61
And there was Mary
Magdalene, and the other
Mary, sitting over against the
sepulchre.
Matthew 27:62-63
62Now
the next day, that
followed the day of the
preparation, the chief priests and
Pharisees came together unto
Pilate, 63Saying, Sir, we
remember that that deceiver
said, while he was yet alive,
After three days I will rise again.
Matthew 27:64
Command therefore that the
sepulchre be made sure until the
third day, lest his disciples come
by night, and steal him away,
and say unto the people, He is
risen from the dead: so the last
error shall be worse than the
first.
Matthew 27:65-66
65Pilate
said unto them, Ye have
a watch: go your way, make it as
sure as ye can. 66So they went,
and made the sepulchre sure,
sealing the stone, and setting a
watch.
