CHAPTER FOUR
Controlling Movement
Ignition switch: where the key goes, has five
positions. Turn to lock before removing
Accelerator: moves vehicle, use right foot,
causes fuel to flow to engine
Brake pedal: slow or stop vehicle, use right
foot, power brakes
Steering wheel: controls direction

Selector lever (automatic): pull handle toward
you then adjust. Vehicle starts in Park or
Neutral. Know the order.
Gearshift (Manual) use clutch to start vehicle.
Use clutch whenever changing gears.
Parking brake: keeps vehicle from rolling
Cruise control: maintains a constant speed.
Intended for flat highway driving. You may not
be as alert as without it.
Aiding Visibility
Headlights: use low beam most of the time
Taillights, dashboard, Etc. : helps other see
you, and easier to see controls inside.
Daytime running lights: helps other see you.
They don’t turn on other lights
Fog lights: project low, can also be uses iin
sonowy conditions
Mirrors
Help see behind and to the side
Most useful when changing lanes
Can’t eliminate blind spots
Adjust before driving (read pg 75)

Windshield wipers and washer
Sun-visors
Defroster
Protection Features
Safety belts: risk of being killed is reduced
45%, risk for injury is reduced 50%. Even
more helpful in light trucks. 49 states require
front-seat to have them on.
Head restraints:protect against whiplash.
Should be about 3.5 inches below top of
head.
Air Bags: follow the warning labels, especially
for children
Door Locks: ??????
Guarding Against Theft
Ignition buzzer reminds you to take keys
out.
Locks: door, steering column, trunk,
hood, gas tank
Antitheft devices: may include remote
control transmitters on key chains

Speedometer/Odometer
Fuel gauge
Alternator gauge
Temperature gauge/light
Oil pressure gauge/light
Brake light
Other lights: parking brake, door ajar, air-bag
Communicating With Others
Taillights
Turn signals
Emergency flashers

Check Surrounding Area
Look for children. About 200 under age
6 are killed yearly
Look for animals
Look for objects
Look under vehicle for stains
Checking Tires
Keep tires at correct air pressure
Look for extensive wear or damage
Know which way your wheels are turned
Body of the Vehicle
Check for damage or missing parts
Make sure lights and windows are clean
and undamaged
Scrape snow and ice
Under the Hood
Check engine oil, radiator coolant/antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid,
windshield washer fluid
Check battery connections
Getting into the Vehicle
Load packages from curbside
Look carefully for approaching traffic
Have keys in hand
Walk around the front of your vehicle to
see better
Wait for a break in traffic before opening
the door
After entering the Vehicle
Close and lock doors
Adjust seat
Adjust head rrestraints
Adjust mirrors
Check the windows
Know the controls that you will use
