Scheduling for Years 3 and 4
• Take REQUIRED courses/clerkships in periods 1 and 2 of
year 3
– Better site selection
– Avoids problems at the end of 4th year
– May assist in taking USMLE Step 1 examination
– Stable numbers of students across periods is valuable to
the sites and faculty for educational experiences
• Goal--have a full complement of students in all the
required clerkships during periods 1-2
– Lead Academic Advisor/Senior Associate Dean will
consider exceptions for educational reasons/ personal
emergencies (in writing)
Additional Scheduling Suggestions/Hints
•
Take Required Courses/Clerkships in Year 3 (AS
MANY AS POSSIBLE): Attempt to have completed
42-44 required credits by start of Period 4 (mid-late
Sept):
–
Career specialty selection--maximal information
–
Take required clerkship(s) in Period 1and/or Period 2 of
Year 3-strongly encouraged-do NOT need to take
USMLE Step 1 first
–

early January (Oct, Nov-early Match)
–
Grades, evaluations available for residency interviews
(Year 4)
–

Clinical Competence Assessment (CCA)-REQUIRED (Pass, Fail;June-Oct)Year 4
Additional Clerkship Scheduling
Suggestions/Hints
• Adhere to cancel/add deadlines
(6-7 weeks before each period begins)
– No changes two weeks prior to the start of a
course/ clerkship except in extreme emergencies
– Do NOT plan to change schedule past the deadline
to accommodate interview time in Year 4 — time is
built into the schedule specifically for that purpose
Additional Clerkship Scheduling
Suggestions/Hints
• Research, elective away for credit
– To receive credit for these courses, the course
MUST be on your schedule prior to
participation and the correct forms must be
COMPLETED and filed with the Curriculum

the forms EARLY for
electives away for credit,
research and international
rotations— retroactive credit
will NOT be given
Student Swapping of Clerkships/Courses
• Student run
• Scott Davenport, G. Fritts, T. Thompson do NOT do
swaps
• Will help with required clerkship swaps if difficulty
encountered and if submit:
• ID numbers of both students needed
• Swap periods, sites, and course numbers for both courses
• e-mail from BOTH students approving swap
Additional Scheduling Suggestions
• Leave time in schedule for interviewing
(Periods 4 (?) and 5 of Year 4)-0.5 day off per
week for emergencies like interviewing
• Do elective away rotations (you may need a
letter explaining our school’s flexible
scheduling) through VSAS (Genne) and subinternships in summer, early fall of year 4
• Take Step 2 early if you did not do as well as
you would have liked on Step 1
• Take Surgery before a surgical specialty if you
want to enter that surgical specialty
• Enjoy rotations – work hard, be professional,
be interested and committed, take
responsibility and learn as much as you can.
Important Decisions for Scheduling
Year 3, 4 – Medical School
DO NOTS:
• Delay taking required clerkships to mid or late Year 3 and Year 4
• Delay registering for required clerkships in Periods 1 and 2 of Year 3
• Register for required clerkships in Period 5 (interviewing) and Period
8 (Graduation)
• Register for Medicine I and Medicine II back to back
• Register for subspecialty elective(s) in a specialty without taking the
core clerkship/course (e.g, cardiology before Med I)
• Register for Emergency Medicine without taking Medicine I or
Surgery
• Delay discussion with clinical mentors past mid-later Year 3 about
specific requirements to match in highly competitive specialties (e.g.
research, other projects, electives away, sub-internships)
Clerkship Scheduling - Lottery
•
Clerkship, site of choice, period: Put in first (often Med I)
•
“Come prepared with several schedules –clerkships may be
filled”
•
Family Medicine Clerkship and Clinics in Primary Care
Selective replace Primary Care Clerkship (PCC); both are
required courses; do NOT need to be sequential (similar to
surgical specialties);
•
UCAM: Select FMCH 7600 and FMCH 7700 early (if strong
desire to take UCAM-- sign up for it as the UC site and FMCH
7511 as elective (3rd month)-no Fam Med PCS Clinic
•
Grading at sites more similar with more central oversight
•
Follow cancel-add deadlines.
•
Monitor the scheduling system for openings—multiple “hits” or
changes; contact colleagues to switch (student run swap)
Clerkship Scheduling – Lottery
• Your schedule will NOT be perfect , but it will work
out over time.
• “You will get the courses you need to graduate”!
• “You will get into your career specialty residency,
despite your schedule”!
• Take time off for interviews
• “ALL WILL WORK OUT IN THE END”!!!
Do NOT stress out
