playing games.

What are games ?
Language games are not activities mainly
aimed to break the ice between students or
to kill time. Byrne (1995) gave the definition
to games as a form of play governed by rules.
They should be enjoyed and fun. They are
not just a diversion, a break from routine
activities, but a way of getting the learner to
use the language in the course of the game.
Similarly, Jill Hadfield (1990) defined games
as “an activity with rules, a goal and an
element of fun.”
What are games ?
Therefore, games involve many factors:
rules(规则), competition(竞赛),
relaxation(放松), and learning(学习), in
particular. The main focus of using game in
class is to help students learn and have fun.

……
How to use games in the classroom?
 Give instructions
Demonstrations:
Some students try out the games:
Teach game-playing English:
Give team names:
Scoreboard:
How to choose a game to use?
Teachers should first consider the level of the game
to fit their students‘ language level.
Teachers should choose the game that fits the
purposes of that class or the content.
teachers should consider students' characteristics.
They should also consider when the game should
be used.
Types of games :
Two types of games in the classroom.
• One kind stresses accuracy which is
* and the other kind stresses fluency,
which is called communicationfocused games.
Task 2
Make a list of the games you know and think
about which are language-focused games and
which are communication-focused games.
Language-focused
games
Bingo game
Chinese whisper,
Musical chairs,
guessing game,
Simon says,
I spy with my little
eye something…,
Communication-focused
games
Describe
and
draw:
learners work in pairs with
one describing a picture
while another one listens
and draws the picture.
spot the differences,
rearrange and describe
Differences of the two types of games
Language-focused games are developed to
reinforce specific grammar points (vocabulary
and structure, etc.)
Communication-focused games are designed to
encourage the creative and spontaneous use of
language.
In language-focused games teacher has more
control in terms of what language point is practiced,
while in communication-focused games it is hard to
predict what specific language learners might use.
The language requirement of the communicationfocused games is more advanced than that of
language-focused ones, because these games are
intended on the overall language ability of learners.
Generally communication-focused will come
later than the language-focused ones.
However, this does not mean that
communication-focused games are better
than language-focused ones only because
they are more advanced.
When new language points are introduced
language-focused games are very necessary
before more challenging activities could be
successfully carried out.
