Barker, Technical Monitor High Performance 94 GHz TE01 Gyro-TWT Amplifier October 1999 Started 1 May 99 50 kG Superconducting Magnet Objectives • Extend DoD’s TWT technology into millimeter range • Develop stable W-band 100kW gyro-amplifier Accomplishments Approach • Gyro-TWTs offer wide bandwidth • TE01 mode transmits high power • Mode-selective circuit and loss stabilize amplifier by suppressing competing modes MVE MURI 99 Kick-off Meeting • 94 GHz, 100 kW gyro-TWT is under construction - MIG gun is being fabricated - Modulator tested for 100W CC-TWT - Mode-selective circuit developed - Loss determined by stability codes - h=20% predicted by large-signal code R. Barker, Technical Monitor 94 GHz Sixth-Harmonic Gyrotron Started 1 May 99 (MURI 95) Objectives October 1999 12-Vane Slotted Circuit • Reduce magnetic field to make lighter and more practical HPM systems • Develop 25-100 kW W-band high harmonic gyrotrons • Basis for high-harmonic gyro amplifiers Accomplishments Approach • Operation at sth-harmonic reduces magnetic field by factor of s • Cusp gun produces needed axisencircling electron beam • Slotted circuit enhances interaction MVE MURI 99 Kick-off Meeting • Two Northrop Cusp guns received • 94GHz 6th-harmonic gyrotron design - 50 kW with 20% efficiency - Under construction • 94GHz 8th-harmonic gyrotron design - Employs permanent magnet R. Barker, Technical Monitor Ka-Band Second-Harmonic Gyro-TWT Amplifier October 1999 Started 1 May 99 Northrop Grumman Cusp Gun Objectives • Improve stability and power level of gyrotron amplifiers • Increase efficiency and frequency of our recent 200kW Ku-band TE21 second-harmonic gyro-TWT Approach Accomplishments • Harmonic gyro-devices are more stable and yield higher power • 35GHz, 50 kW gyro-TWT designed with h=20% - Employs Northrop Cusp gun - Tested designed 0 dB coupler - Tested mode-selective circuit - Determined loss with stability codes • Sliced mode-selective circuit suppresses competing modes • Axis-encircling electrons will yield full efficiency in linearly polarized mode-selective circuit MVE MURI 99 Kick-off Meeting R. Barker, Technical Monitor High Efficiency Ka-Band Second-Harmonic Peniotron October 1999 Started 1 May 99 4-Vane Slotted Circuit Objectives • Improve device efficiency of Tohoku’s recent third-harmonic h=35% peniotron • Achieve device efficiency > 50% in harmonic gyro-device • Foundation for peniotron-amplifiers Approach • Accomplishments sth-harmonic peniotron excites mth-order azimuthal mode with m=s+1 • Received two Northrop Cusp guns • 35GHz 2nd-harmonic peniotron design • Slotted circuit enhances interaction - 150 kW with 50% device efficiency and allows desired mth-order symmetry in stable, lowest-order mode - Employs Northrop Cusp gun • Cusp gun produces needed axis-encircling electron beam MVE MURI 99 Kick-off Meeting R.
