Digital design & life-cycle
management for products & services
Objective: To develop and demonstrate models,
systems and tools enabling products and services to
be designed and developed digitally for full lifecycle management. The focus is on digital
prototyping, simulation and virtual reality support for
distributed design, including requirements capture,
development, production, distribution and maintenance,
including upgrading. The products and services particularly
envisaged are those which, in combination, make full use of embedded
intelligence linked with external communication and information services.
Work is expected to involve interaction between suppliers, products in
use, and customers to maximise value, minimise overall environmental
cost, and facilitate enhancement and re-use. (1999 IST Programme II.3.1)

Digital design & life-cycle
management for products & services
(A) Products with services (embedded intelligence,
external communications)
(B) Digital prototyping, simulation, virtual reality
(C) Lifecycle (requirements capture, development,
production, distribution, maintenance, re-use)
(D) Distributed - including suppliers, products in
use, customers
IST Programme
38
Singleimage
Computationally intensive applications
for engineering design and simulation
The aim is to exploit high performance computing
to bring greater efficiency into design and
production (C) cycles. Increased product (A)
complexity leads to the requirements for larger
simulations (B) of more complex problems,
simultaneous analyses of multiple design and
planning options and multi-disciplinary analyses multi-physics simulation.

Product data interchange for the
maritime information society
The objective is to create the virtual-enterprisewide, internet based product (A) data management
system that will enable all maritime enterprises to
take full advantage of STEP (B) standardisation. It
will create a data exchange and management
architecture capable of supporting virtual
enterprises and speeding information exchange
between collaborative (D) partners involved with
all stages of the ship lifecycle. (C)
