* Identified 207 children with schizophrenic
mothers [‘high risk’]
* Along with 104 children with non-schizophrenic
mothers (matched control) [‘low risk’]
* Aged between 10-18 at the start of the study
* Matched on: age, gender, parent socioeconomic class and urban/rural residence
*
* A follow up study was conducted in 1974 and
1989
* The results were published by Parnas et al in
1993
*
* The results suggested there was a strong
genetic link in schizophrenia
*Schizophrenia diagnosed in 16.2% of high
risk group compared to 1.9% in low risk
group
*Schizotypal personality disorder diagnosed
in 18.8% of high risk group against 5% of
low risk group
*
* Combining the figures for the 2 disorders = 35%
in high-risk group and 6.9% in low-risk group
* Similar findings found in the New York High Risk
Project = 25 yr follow-up (Erlennmeyer-Kimling
et al. 1997)
*
