Pre-Reading Discussion

Meet with your partner and preview the book. Look at the covers, read the chapter titles and check out any illustrations.

Now it’s time to write a 3 paragraph essay about your pre reading thoughts.

(indent) First paragraph: Start with a strong hook. Talk about what attracted you to the book, giving at least three details. Had you heard of this author before? Did the cover illustration pull you in? Is it part of a series that you like? Did a friend recommend it to you?

(indent) Second paragraph: What do you know about this book? Give at least three thoughts. What genre do you think it is? What do you think the plot will be about? Where do you think the story takes place? Do you know any of the characters’ names? (indent) Third paragraph: Make three connections between the book and yourself. Are you interested in the genre or plot of the book? Do you have anything in common with the author? Do you live in the area where the book takes place? Are you like any of the characters? Finish it up with a ‘wow’ sentence!

Include a perfect final copy of this essay in your folder.

Section Work

Divide your book into five sections. Complete one of the following activities for each section. You do not have to go in order-any activity may be done with any section, as long as you complete them all!

Vocabulary: Choose 4 new words from your reading. Write your own definition of the word based on it’s use in the text (context clues).

Look up the word in a dictionary and write the definition.

Write a new sentence using the word.

Comprehension: Write 3 easy comprehension questions (thin questions).

Write 3 deep thinking questions (thick questions). Write answers for the questions.

Inferences: Find 3 places where you think the author expects you to infer or draw conclusions. For each inference, write the author’s sentence(s), then write a sentence or two of your own about what you infer from the reading.
