Isaiah
53
Who hath believed our report?
and to whom is the
arm of the LORD revealed?
Isaiah 53:1
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
“our report”
is
your and my
message
to others
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
Forepart of our message: Alienation
– As to both the houses of Israel
– Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth:
for the LORD hath spoken, I have
nourished and brought up children,
and they have rebelled against me….
Your country is desolate, your cities
are burned with fire: your land, strangers
devour it in your presence, and it is
desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
Isaiah 1:2,7
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
Forepart of our message: Alienation
– As to all Gentiles
– That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and
upon my mountains tread him under foot: then
shall his yoke depart from off them, and his
burden depart from off their shoulders.
This is the purpose that is purposed upon
the whole earth: and this is the hand that is
stretched out upon all the nations.
Isaiah 14:25,26
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
Main part of our message: Reconciliation
– Natural Israel will be restored
– For the LORD will have mercy on
Jacob, and will yet choose Israel,
and set them in their own land:…
Isaiah 14:1
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
Main part of our message: Reconciliation
– Earth’s inhabitants will be restored
– And in this mountain shall the LORD of
hosts make unto all people a feast of fat
things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat
things full of marrow, of wines on the
lees well refined. And he will destroy in
this mountain the face of the covering
cast over all people, and the veil that is
spread over all nations.
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
Main part of our message: Reconciliation
– Earth’s inhabitants will be restored
He will swallow up death in victory; and
the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from
off all faces; and the rebuke of his people
shall he take away from off all the earth:
for the LORD hath spoken it.
Isaiah 25:6-8
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report?...
Main part of our message: Reconciliation
And all things are of God,
who hath reconciled us to
himself by Jesus Christ, and
hath given to us the
ministry of reconciliation;
2 Corinthians 5:18
Isaiah 53:1
…the arm of the LORD…
Isaiah 53:1 - ...and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
But though he [Jesus] had done so
many miracles before them,
yet they believed not on him:
That the saying of Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled, which he spake,
Lord, who hath believed our report?
and to whom hath the arm of the Lord
been revealed?
John 12:37-38
Isaiah 53:1 - ...and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
“arm” is the executor of the body
• Awake, awake, put on strength, O
arm of the LORD; awake, as in the
ancient days, in the generations of old.
Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab,
and wounded the dragon?
Isaiah 51:9
Isaiah 53:1 - ...and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
“arm” is the executor of the body
• But to us there is but one God, the Father, of
whom are all things, and we in him; and one
Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things,
and we by him.
1 Corinthians 8:6
Isaiah 53:1
Who hath believed our report?
To whom is
the arm of the LORD revealed?
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
“…But how few have heard, in the true
sense of hearing; how few have appreciated
it; how few have seen in Jesus the Arm of
Jehovah, stretched down for the relief of
Adam and his race from sin and death!
Only a handful, the saintly few, really
and truly believe the message,…”
R4831:5
Isaiah 53:1 - Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
What does Isaiah 53 reveal to us
about Jehovah’s “Arm”?
Reveals what Jehovah’s arm must first
be and do to reconcile the world
For he shall grow up before him as
a tender plant,
and as a root out of a dry ground:
he hath no form nor comeliness; and
when we shall see him,
there is no beauty that
we should desire him.
Isaiah 53:2
Isaiah 53:2
…a tender plant,…
Isaiah 53:2 - For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant,...
…a tender plant,…
• Refers to Jesus’ tender loving heart
And Jesus went forth, and saw
a great multitude, and was
moved with compassion toward them,
and he healed their sick.
Matthew 14:14
Isaiah 53:2
…a root out of a dry ground:…
Isaiah 53:2 - For he shall grow up before him as…a root out of a dry ground:…
…a root out of a dry ground:…
• Refers to Jesus’ perfect human vitality
• For such a high priest became us,
who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
separate from sinners, and
made higher than the heavens;
Hebrews 7:26
Isaiah 53:2
…no form nor comeliness;
and
…no beauty…
Isaiah 53:2 - ...he hath no form nor comeliness;...there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Jesus:
• Had no traditional attributes of royalty
• Did not come from a royal blood line
• Was not a great warrior
He is despised and rejected of men; a
man of sorrows, and
acquainted with grief:
and
he hid as it were his face from us;
he was despised, and
we esteemed him not.
Isaiah 53:3 (margin)
Isaiah 53:3
…despised and rejected of men;…
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
They that hate me without a cause are
more than the hairs of mine head:
they that would destroy me,
being mine enemies wrongfully,
are mighty: then I restored that
which I took not away.
Psalm 69:4
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
“…He was despised of the Romans
and counted unworthy
of particular notice,…”
R3590:5
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
And when he was
come into his own country,
he taught them in their synagogue,
insomuch that they were astonished, and
said, Whence hath this man this wisdom,
and these mighty works?
Is not this the carpenter's son?
is not his mother called Mary?
and his brethren, James, and Joses, and
Simon, and Judas?
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
And his sisters, are they not all with us?
Whence then hath this man
all these things?
And they were offended in him.
But Jesus said unto them,
A prophet is not without honor,
save in his own country,
and in his own house.
Matthew 13:54-57
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
He came unto his own,
and his own received him not.
John 1:11
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
But some of them went their ways
to the Pharisees, and told them what
things Jesus had done.
Then gathered the chief priests and the
Pharisees a council,
and said, What do we?
for this man doeth many miracles.
If we let him thus alone,
all men will believe on him:
Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men;...
and the Romans shall come and
take away both our place and nation...
Then from that day forth
they took counsel together
for to put him to death.
John 11:46-48,53
Isaiah 53:3
…a man of sorrows,
and
acquainted with grief:…
Isaiah 53:3 - He is...a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief:...
…a man of sorrows,
and
acquainted with grief:…
• Jesus did not feel sorry for himself
• Jesus’ sorrow and grief was for others
Isaiah 53:3 (margin)
…he hid as it were
his face from us;…
Isaiah 53:3 (margin) - ...and he hid as it were his face from us;...
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
thou that killest the prophets, and stonest
them which are sent unto thee,
how often would I have gathered
thy children together,
even as a hen gathereth her chickens
under her wings, and ye would not!
Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
Matthew 23:37,38
Isaiah 53:3 (margin) - ...and he hid as it were his face from us;...
“…And because men lightly esteemed
and even despised him,
"he hid as it were his face from them."
[…Because of their unbelief
and hardness of heart,
they therefore lost the benefit
of his wisdom and teaching
and many of his mighty works….]”
R1359:3
Surely he hath borne our griefs,
and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isaiah 53:4
Isaiah 53:4
…borne our griefs,
and
carried our sorrows:…
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
And when Jesus was come into Peter's
house, he saw his wife's mother laid,
and sick of a fever. And he touched
her hand, and the fever left her:
and she arose, and ministered unto them.
When the even was come,
they brought unto him many that were
possessed with devils:…
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
and he cast out the spirits with his word,
and healed all that were sick:
That it might be fulfilled which was
spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying,
Himself took our infirmities,
and bare our sicknesses.
Matthew 8:14-17
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
And great multitudes came unto him,
having with them those that were
lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and
many others, and cast them down at
Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
Matthew 15:30
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
• Jesus frequently restored health to the sick
– Restored the lame
– Healed the blind
– Removed blood disorders
– Cast out devils
– Restored voices to the mute
– Cured leprosy
– Raised the dead
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
• Exactly how did he bear our infirmities?
And he came down with them, and stood in
the plain, and the company of his disciples,
and a great multitude of people out of all
Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast
of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him,
and to be healed of their diseases;…
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
• Exactly how did he bear our infirmities?
And they that were vexed with unclean spirits:
and they were healed.
And the whole multitude sought to touch him:
for there went virtue out of him,
and healed them all.
Luke 6:17-19
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
• Exactly how did he bear our infirmities?
For we have not a high priest which
cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points
tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15
Isaiah 53:4 - Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:…
• Exactly how did he bear our infirmities?
We do not know that our Lord was sick
with any of the ordinary maladies.
His perfect organism would apparently
be proof against the intrusions of special
diseases. Rather it would appear
that his healing of diseases merely
exhausted his vitality, and thus left upon him
the weight of our sicknesses.
R4138:2
Isaiah 53:4
…stricken, smitten of God,
…afflicted.
Isaiah 53:4 - ...yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Now Jacob's well was there.
Jesus therefore, being wearied
with his journey, sat thus on the well:
and it was about the sixth hour.
John 4:6
Isaiah 53:4 - ...yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
And as they led him away,
they laid hold upon one Simon, a
Cyrenian, coming out of the country,
and on him they laid the cross,
that he might bear it after Jesus.
Luke 23:26
Isaiah 53:4 - ...yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
• The people concluded that Jesus’ weakness
was evidence of God’s disfavor
• But the Apostle Peter assures us:
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins,
the just for the unjust, that he might bring
us to God, being put to death in the flesh,
but quickened by the Spirit:
1 Peter 3:18
But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for
our iniquities: the chastisement of
our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5
Isaiah 53:5
…wounded for our transgressions,
…bruised for our iniquities:…
Isaiah 53:5 - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:…
• “wounded”
• to profane or defile
• “bruised”
• to crush
Isaiah 53:5 - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:…
• Verse 5 teaches how Jesus was to die
And being found in fashion as a man,
he humbled himself, and became obedient
unto death, even the death of the cross.
Philippians 2:8
Isaiah 53:5 - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:…
• Verse 5 teaches how Jesus was to die
And if a man have committed a sin worthy of
death, and he be to be put to death, and thou
hang him on a tree: His body shall
not remain all night upon the tree, but thou
shalt in any wise bury him that day;
(for he that is hanged is accursed of God;)
that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD
thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
Deuteronomy 21:22-23
Isaiah 53:5 - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:…
• Verse 5 teaches us that
Jesus would die by crucifixion
Isaiah 53:5 (NIV)
…the punishment that brought us
peace was upon him, and
by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5(NIV) - ...the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,...by his wounds we are healed
• Jesus is chastised – we gain peace
• Jesus is wounded – we are healed
Isaiah 53:5(NIV) - ...the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,...by his wounds we are healed
And being found in fashion as a man,
he humbled himself, and
became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross.
Wherefore
God also hath highly exalted him,
and given him a name
which is above every name:
Phillippians 2:8,9
Isaiah 53:5(NIV) - ...the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,...by his wounds we are healed
• As our High Priest,
Jesus first reconciled us to God
• As world’s Messiah,
Jesus reconciles them to God
Isaiah 53:5(NIV) - ...the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,...by his wounds we are healed
• Jesus’ loyalty in suffering makes
possible full reconciliation with God
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned every one
to his own way; and the
LORD hath laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:6
Isaiah 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned every one
to his own way;…
Isaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;…
• Who are the “stray sheep”?
• Adam and his family
• What man of you, having a hundred
sheep, if he lose one of them, doth
not leave the ninety and nine in the
wilderness, and go after that
which is lost, until he find it?
Luke 15:4
Isaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;…
• Who are the “stray sheep”?
• Adam and his family
• Let us rather interpret the parable on a
broader scale, in comportment with the
facts and the Scriptures. Let us
understand the one stray sheep to
represent Adam and his family;…
R5427:2
Isaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way;…
• Who are the “stray sheep”?
• Natural Israel
• But he answered and said,
I am not sent but unto
the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Matthew 15:24
Isaiah 53:6
…and the LORD hath laid on him the
iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:6 - …and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
• Jesus paid 2 penalties:
Adam’s penalty by dying
Therefore as by the offense of one
judgment came upon all men
to condemnation; even so
by the righteousness of one
the free gift came upon all men
unto justification of life.
Romans 5:18
Isaiah 53:6 - …and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
• Jesus paid 2 penalties:
Israel’s penalty by hanging on a tree
Christ hath redeemed us
from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is
written, Cursed is every one that
hangeth on a tree:
