1 Source of Inspiration "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed.“ Mahatma Gandhi “Only when the last tree has been cut down, Only when the last river has been poisoned, Only when the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.” Cree -Indian Prophecy 2 Environment “Environment today is playing a crucial role in shaping economies, influencing policies, and deciding the fate of heads of states. Internally, it is a priority issue in the agenda of every sector—from industry to agriculture. So, it is time we got the most important segment of the population, the students, on board in this discourse. It is now imperative to build up skills, and deepen their knowledge base in environment conservation and climate change. 3 Education for Sustainable Development The concept of Sustainable School has been conceived from UN declaration of “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, 2005- 2014”, which was resolved in the 57th meeting of United Nations General Assembly held in December 2002. DESD 'emphasizing that education is an essential element for achieving sustainable development'. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from quality education and learn the values, behavior and lifestyles required for a sustainable future and for positive societal transformation. ESD is for everyone, at all stages of life and in all possible learning contexts. 4 Perception towards Green Schooling Green School concept firmly believes that, “If we want our children to flourish... We need to connect them with the nature Before we ask them to save it”. Green School dedicates itself towards empowering the future citizens and green innovators to take responsibility for the sustainability of the earth. Green Schools are creating new paradigm in the Education. 5 Vision and Values of Green School The vision of Green School is to create a world of natural and holistic learning environment, that promotes leadership values and life skills along with essential academic skills. Respect for our planet and its inhabitants comes naturally first to all Green School communities. We believe in three simple rules which influences our decision: Be local; Let our environment be our guide; “ imagine how our grandchildren will be affected by our actions” Our core Values that guide us are: Integrity, Responsibility, Empathy, Sustainability, Peace, Equality and Trust. 6 Green School Philosophy Green schools prepares students to become leaders and citizens who understands how the natural world works ?, see the patterns that connect human activity to the nature; have the knowledge, values, and skills to act effectively on that understanding. Green schools contribute towards making our communities more sustainable, making them able to explore solutions related to environmental problems, and serve as models of responsible action. There is no blue print for being a Green school. The hallmark of this concept is its diversity.. 7 Indian Concept of Green School There are various Green School concepts around the world. But our whole Green Schooling concept is designed on the bases of Indian ethos “5 elements of Nature (Panchabhutas)” . 1.Prithvi 2.Vayu 3.Agni 4.Jal 5.Akash (Earth) (Air) (Energy) (Water) (Sky) Sustainable Sites Environmental Quality Energy Efficiency Water Efficiency Daylight and Night Sky Our Green School Initiative provides an opportunity to learn about environment not by memorizing yet another text book, but by 'doing'. Various things—count, weigh, measure, explore, investigate, and analyze in the classroom and beyond . 8 Green Teachers Teachers are in a prime position to be able to weave these basics throughout the curriculum at every grade level. Whether they start with an environmental issue or with fundamental ecological principles, teachers can nurture the knowledge, skills, and values essential to sustainable living. A variety of teaching strategies are particularly appropriate for fostering sustainable living. We promote interdisciplinary instructional methods that are age-level appropriate; actively engage students in learning in and out of the classroom; involve them in long-term projects; and create an atmosphere of purposeful conversation and reflection about complex issues. 9 Selection of Green Teachers Text content for an advertisement to invite CVs. •Do you want to teach at a Green School? •Are you an impassioned educator? •Do you care about the sustainability of the world? •Are you the kind of person who goes the extra mile to achieve change ? •Do you want to contribute to the success of this amazing pioneering project in education that is attracting global attention and inspiring people to make life-changing decisions in order for their children to have a Green School education and experience? 10 Green Teacher Training Program The Green School Teacher needs a unique capacity – building program that is aimed to help them to enhance their understanding towards concept of Green Schooling. Duration of this program can be decided on the bases of teacher’s interests, timing should be after school hours, and special incentive can be paid by the school management committee to the participants. Program should be focused to enhance their understanding in: Science of Environment, Green curriculum designing, Concept of Sustainable Development and related issues, Environmental Education – theory, approaches and methods , Green Games, Green activities designing and Linking Green activities with CCE etc. 11 Green Co-Curricular Activities Green School integrates activities with existing curricula of Maths, Science, Language Arts and other subjects. Its classroom is a hands-on laboratory which offers opportunities for real-world problem-solving keeping environment in mind or applying basic principles of environment. Student undertakes green projects, assignments and study reports as co curricular activity on the following issues: Water conservation Rainwater harvesting Water recycling Air Pollution Oxygen balancing Commuting practices Green Area planning Biodiversity Pesticide use Energy conservation Waste segregation Waste reuse/recycle Climate change Sanitation 12 Few Examples of Green Games Green Gamble : To help players learn environmental terms. Whose Garbage? : To promote an awareness of the relationship between lifestyles & the generation of waste. Forget Me Not! To classify objects as biodegradable. Go and Touch :To help players observe and identify different natural objects. Who Am I ? To help players use deductive logic in identifying diverse elements of nature and grain an insight into the characteristics of a particular element of nature. Web of Life: To help players identify linkages between components in the ecosystem. Pick and Sort :To help players observe differences and similarities amongst natural objects of different sizes 13 Examples of Green Curriculum- Maths Bird feeding experiment – study the frequency of visits to a bird table.? Are birds influenced by colour, type of food, time of day ? Which birds visit the table? How often ? Does this change as the season progresses ? Do different species prefer different foods ? Plot changing times on a graph. When all the data is in – what are the different ways of compiling and displaying the results (tables, pics charts etc.) Environmental Opinion Poll: Design, implement and analyze opinion poll on an environmental issue - at home, at school, or in the community. How will this be achieved scientifically? What do the results show? 14 Examples of Green Curriculum- English Class debate – could be held on a number of topical environmental issues, such as: different energy sources, global warming, whaling, recycling, Intensive agriculture etc. Look at both sides of the argument. Record or report the main arguments and findings. Research and Role Play : Record or report the imagined experience and discoveries of people, events and societies of significance in the past. Record or report the experience and discoveries. How does the social, political and historical setting affect available resources and how they live? Research writing project - on an environmental aspect such as global warming, flooding, fishing and hunting & agriculture. 15 Examples of Green Curriculum- Science We plant seeds in half a milk carton and watch it grow – (these are biodegradable and can later be replanted in the school grounds ). We make project of the findings. Growth in different conditions: in the dark, under permanent light, outdoors and indoors. We create the key - for identifying pond-life or different mini animals. A key you can draw design more complex diagrams like food chains and / or food webs and then categorize the animals in the chain, e.g. insect amphibian - fish - bird - mammal. Animal Athletes – Using the mini-beast study , we also hold a minibeast race. Compare the creatures and make a report on: How different types of animals move? How fast they can go? What is the best way to record the findings? Why are some faster/or more mobile than others?. 16 Culture of Green School- Smart by Nature • Learning is by doing. •Freedom without pressure •Intimacy with natural world •Aesthetic environment for learning •Students can be their “true selves” •Transparency and informality •Innovation and creativity •Close connection between indoors and outdoors •Many opportunities for field trips and on campus •Safe and comfortable for all kinds of learners •A large variety of settings for teaching and learning •Creative teaching with ample space and nature •Creative Arts – embracing Art, Crafts, Music, Drama, Story-telling The best hope for learning to live sustainably lies in schooling that is "smart by nature.” 17 Benefits of the Green Schooling • Enhancement in overall annual school result. •Consistency in student's Fitness level. •Save money through reduced consumption •Increase efficiency of operations and use of resources, •Create favorable learning and teaching conditions, •Educates students on the caring for the environment. •Curriculum enrichment through practical experiences. •Development in ownership; personal and social. •Providing a vehicle for developing community cohesion. •More involvement of student in learning process. •Discipline is driven by respect, care and concern. •Students are nurtured in natural environment. •Reduction in parent complain ratio towards learning. 18 Our Green School Initiative in Gujarat Our experience of establishing first Green School in Modasa, Gujarat has just started with the Green Campaigns like: •Say No to Fire Crackers •Say No to Polybags •Is your vehicle PUC checked? •Celebrating a non-toxic Holi These campaigns have been successful in bringing about attitudinal changes towards greening social behavior. 19 Day begins with the Green Pledge Every student of B-KANAE Green School take Green Pledge in everyday , I believe that future of the planet is important to me.
