Being a teacher with a degree in Kinesiology I know the importance of
physical education, being active, learning teamwork and outdoor
education.
Having participated in many outdoor education trips with organized groups I
know that this trip to North Star will give children an experience they cannot
receive inside the school walls of DBGS. This will also be a trip where they
will create memories that will last a lifetime. I’m excited to be able to give
our students this opportunity.
In Canada I’ve instructed at, then directed a sports camp for children aged
5-13 for four summers. I know the importance of safety while managing a
large group of children.
I am really looking forward to taking many of my current and former
students to Fujairah and know we will have a fantastic time. They are a
great group of children and are accompanied by an experienced team of
great staff.

Having previously taught in the UK, prior to teaching in Saudi Arabia, one of
my favourite times of year was after SATs in May when I would go with my
year 6 class on the school’s annual residential trip. With the whole of the
year spent looking forward to this month as an important one, the
excitement of the children was always very palpable.
Attending the flagship site of a well known outdoor adventure company in
the UK, the children, and the adults chaperoning, were incredibly well
catered for and well looked after. Offering a vast range of activities lead by
very qualified staff, some of the favourite activities included lots of high
ropes including ‘Jacob’s Ladder’, the vertical challenge, abseiling, zipwire to
name but a few as well as a range of engaging evening activities, much like
North Star.
In addition to the marvelous activities, being able to spend the time with
friends in groups and being away from home and their parents, often for the
first time, were big highlights and are experiences that all children need to
encounter as they grow up.

As my colleagues have already discussed ‘outdoor education’ is a great
experience for children. It helps develop their self-reliance and
independence. These are vital skills at school and throughout life, although
it can be a wrench for their parents to see them go!
I am qualified through the American Red Cross to administer First Aid and
CPR.
I have led Girl Guide camps in the UK with girls aged 9-14.
I have co-led Girl Scout trips here in Saudi including local camps and a
diving trip to the Red Sea which involved air travel.
Personally I see my main role on this trip as giving the children support and
reassurance (should they need it) as I know many of them well and hope
they would be able to come to me with any worries.

As a parent and teacher I have always felt that ‘outdoor education’ is very
important to all children. Even those who don’t usually enjoy active sports
and pastimes can benefit a great deal from new experiences away from the
usual classroom set-up.
As a primary school teacher I do not claim to be a qualified instructor in any
particular activity but I have participated in a range of trips and led some
interesting camps.
In the UK I have attended a number of adventure camps at recognised
centres with children between the ages of 8 and 11 years old. During the
camps the children completed a range of activities including; canoeing,
caving, climbing and moor trekking.
Whilst working in Kenya I organised and led camps into the African bush –
miles from civilisation! The children ranged in age from 7-13 years old. On
these camps the children learnt basic camp craft, cooking, navigation etc.
Here in the Kingdom, I have participated in the International Award including
an expedition to Oman and a camp in Riyadh.
