“Of Mice and Men”
Chapter Five Discussion Questions
In your small group, discuss the following questions.
Please have one student serve as “secretary” and
record your conclusions. (Minimum length three
sentences.)
1. Re-read Curley’s wife’s statements from the bottom of page 87
(“Wha’s the matter with me?”) to the middle of page 88 (“If I’d went, I
wouldn’t be livin’ like this.”) Do you think she is right?
2. Re-read the conversation between Candy on the bottom page of 94
(“You an’ me can get that little place…”) to the top of 95 (“An’ then I’ll
come back an’ work another month…”) Do you agree with George’s
analysis? Why do you think their dream can’t happen?
3. Candy calls the girl a “God d—n tramp” and blames her for ending
his dream of living on his own farm. Do you agree? Was it her fault?
4. While Curley is running off to find a gun, George asks Slim if they
couldn’t bring Lennie in and just lock him up. Slim replies that
Curley is going to want to shoot him, and then “s’pose they lock
him up an’ strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain’t no
good, George.” George agrees. So what do you think should
happen? What would be the best solution?
5. Carlson’s Luger (gun) is missing. What do you think happened to it?
6. George gave Slim false information, saying that Lennie would have
gone south, since they came from the north. What do you think
George will do?
