Early Pan-Africanism
• After World War I ended, self rule and self
determination became more popular around the
world
• By the 1930’s, most African colonies were calling for
independence due to the high amounts of
nationalism
Post World War II
• After World War II, African colonies began gaining
independence
o Most colonies had peaceful transitions of power
o A few colonies achieved independence by using violence
Pan – African Flag
• Red – blood that was shed by the African people
• Black – people of African descent
• Green – the Earth
Criticism of Pan Africanism
• Pan – Africanism is often criticized due to the
cultural differences found throughout the African
continent
