worldwide investigation of sociocultural and
political change
builds on the European Values Surveys, first
carried out in 1981
Second wave 1990-1991
third wave was carried out in 1995-1996
fourth wave is taking place in 1999-2001
World Values Surveys (WVS)
hundreds of publications in more than
a dozen languages
 Subsets used in textbooks and
computer programs
 grew out of a study launched by the
European Values Survey group (EVS)
 Original motivation said to be study of
decline of church attendance

