A Sneak Preview to 4

Grade

• Welcome to the 4th Grade Preview. • We are thrilled to be teaching at Oliveira Elementary, especially at the Fourth Grade level. As your child’s teacher, we promise to provide a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment for all my students. • Our goal next year is to allow our students to realize their potential as young scholars and to ensure them the opportunity to take risks with learning in a safe, healthy setting. Our objectives for your child this year are twofold: – First, achieving academic success with the 4 succeed academically and socially.

Grade Curriculum • Language Arts:

This year, we are learning from the Treasure curriculum. In the fourth

grade, we want our students to apply critical thinking skills as they read, respond to, and use information from text.

Students work on specific skills and reading strategies that help

increase comprehension as they explore a variety of genres including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, science fiction, with a special emphasis on historical fiction.

The literature will lay the foundation for our writing projects. We will

use several strategies to help student organize their ideas. We will use graphic organizers to help students follow the writing process (write, edit and publish).

Literature that will be read:Islands of the Dolphins, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Knights of the Round

Table, Great Horn Spoon, Hercules, Bearstone, and Tornado

This year, we are learning from the Expressions curriculum.

Our focus will be on the following concepts:

Decimals, fractions, place value, multiplication, dividing, factoring,

generalize and analyzing patterns

Science:

Houghton Mifflin, “California Science” will focus on: Organization of Living

Things, Ecosystems, The Solid Earth, The Atmosphere and Beyond, The Nature of Matter and Energy and Motion.

Social Studies:

Scott Foresman, “Our Nation” will focus on: The Land of California, Early

People in California, Early History to Statehood, Growth and Development since 1850 and California Government.

Home Support/Homework

Your home is your child’s first and most important classroom. Your child will be more successful in the classroom, if you have the following items in your home: pencils, lined paper, crayons, scissors, ruler (inch/centimeters) and glue. If these items are not accessible, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss some options.

Parents, please monitor what your child brings to school. Only items needed to complete work should be brought to school. Any toys found by the teacher will be taken away and returned to parents or on the last day of school. Homework: Students are given homework daily. The homework may include:

   

Math – real-life problems Language Arts – text evidence/literature questions Science and Social Studies – writing across curriculum 20 minutes of nightly reading – reading log

Open communication is the key to maintaining a progressive evolvement of students’ learning and study skills. Most importantly, discuss an ideal time and place that will be beneficial for your child to accomplish his/her goals as a scholar.

parent/ guardian.

Miscellaneous Information

Field Trips

We will be embarking on various exciting study trips in

Fourth Grade. We are planning to visit: Coyote Hills, Mission San Jose, SOS Camp (2 days), Capitol Mall, iRecycle

In order for these study trips to happen, we do need

parent/guardian drivers to help transport students! Please take the time to read, fill out, and return the Parent Driver packet that has been prepared ahead of time

Volunteer Positions

• Any help and support that you can offer to our class will be greatly appreciated! Nothing will be considered minor or unimportant in helping to better our classroom environment. As a passionate educator, time is often a restraint that prevents me from attending to my students as much as I would like. So please, do not hesitate to suggest or offer any services you are able to provide. Please sign up. – Grading papers – Reading group facilitators – Field trip supervision – Fundraiser events
