Outline – Controlling Airborne Hazards Hazard Control Options Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems (LEVS) Dilution Ventilation for Contaminant Control Hazard Control Options Remember Identify (Chapters 4 & 5) Evaluate (Chapters 4 & 5) Control (This Chapter!) Engineering Controls .1 Administrative Controls .2 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) .3 .1 .2 .3 Engineering Controls Equipment design changes Automation, enclosures, etc. Reduce or prevent release of contaminants Substitution Use a less hazardous material Work practice changes Fundamentals of work methods engineering Including personal hygiene Improved housekeeping and maintenance Constant vigilance! Administrative Controls Use only after engineering controls! Control or limit human access Worker rotation This is a great tool, but remember it now exposes even more workers Worker training Worker Training Can be effective if consistent and appropriate Specialized Special work practices/procedures Emergency situations (spills, uncontrolled releases of contaminants, etc.) Training effect can be noticeable immediately following training, but these results decrease over time without further training (Hawthorne Effect?) Ventilation shall mean the provision, circulation or exhausting of air into or from an area or space Local exhaust ventilation shall mean the mechanical removal of contaminated air from the point where the contaminant is being .generated or liberated "Dilution ventilation means inducing and mixing uncontaminated air with contaminated air in such quantities that the resultant mixture in the breathing zone will not exceed the permissible exposure limit (PEL) specified .for any contaminant "Exhaust ventilation" means the general movement of air out of the area or permit-required confined space by mechanical or natural .means "Tempered make-up air means air which has been " conditioned by changing its heat content to obtain a specific .desired temperature Industrial Ventilation vs. IAQ Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Industrial Ventilation vs. IAQ HVAC System Functions Heating Cooling Ventilation Filtration Dehumidification Humidification Distribution Industrial Ventilation vs. IAQ Industrial Ventilation vs. IAQ Routes of Entry Inhalation • Ingestion • Absorption • Injection • Control Options Process change Substitution Isolation Ventilation Administrative control Personal protective equipment • • • • • • Problem Characterization AIRFLOW EMISSION SOURCE BURTON 2-1
