
Everyone has had employees steal from
them!

Who runs background checks today –
less than 50% of non governmental
businesses.
Three reasons why every employer should be running
a pre employment background check?
1. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates that employee theft may cost
American businesses as much as $50 billion on an annual basis. The
Chamber has also reported that 30 percent of small business failure is
caused by employee theft and estimates that 75 percent of all employees
steal once and one-half of those steal a second time.
2. Negligent Hiring Lawsuits – this means that if you hire someone who
harms a customer or employee and it then found out that the person has a
prior history of assault or battery the business owner can be held liable.
3. "Employers are hot targets for theft because workers know their systems,
controls and weaknesses, and they can bide their time waiting for the right
opportunity," The Wall Street Journal.
The three reasons why most employers
don’t run background checks!
1. They think that they are difficult to run, take too much time and cost too
much money
2. They are not sure of the rules and regulations / they do not know they are
allowed to run background checks
3. Owners don’t realize just how effective they are in identifying people with
criminal histories – Thousands of repeat offenders would never be hired if a
background check was run on them.

A background check via ROG can be run securely online in less
then five minutes and at a very reasonable cost.

Many initial results can be returned in less than one hour and
comprehensive search results within one to three days so there
is no significant delay in making a hiring decision.

What is the cost of making a bad hiring decision
▪
▪
▪
▪
Monetary loss of what was stolen (may or may not ever be recovered)
Time lost to dealing with the police and courts
Expense of hiring a new employee and training them
Scheduling be it you or your other staff filling in shifts until a replacement is
hired

Each area of a business and in some cases
each position requires a different background
screen to be run to properly review an applicant
for the sake of today’s conversation we will be
reviewing:
 Retail
 Office
 Transport
 Dealer
Social Security Number
Name & Address
Nationwide Criminal (44 states)
Nationwide Sex Offender
State / County Search
MVR

Workers Compensation
Credit Check
Drug Testing
Personality Assessments
Clerk Screen – A basic nationwide criminal
search
Manager Screen – A basic nationwide
criminal search plus possible credit check
and employment history
Supervisor Screen – A basic nationwide
criminal check, employment history, and
MVR
These searches depend much more on the
role that the applicant would be filling and
could be as simple as a basic employee
screen for a receptionist to a full criminal,
education, drug testing, and personality
assessment for a new management level
applicant.
Someone driving a company vehicle that is potentially loaded with
thousands of gallons of gasoline need to be fully reviewed – lets take a
minute to think about the recent airplane incident that occurred in
Europe.
Criminal
MVR
Drug Testing
Personality Assessment
DOT mandated random drug testing and post accident testing
Consortium or not
A dealer is an investment in time and money
and to do everything possible to ensure this
is a good use of both is very important
Criminal – nationwide criminal with state /
county if necessary
Credit – available with FICO score
Drug testing has many options and ways it can be addressed
Saliva – Very limited value of information as the drugs only show up for
a short period of time but least expensive and easiest to do onsite
Urine – Industry standard with a longer information / window for testing
Hair – The best method possible but also the most expensive and
usually longest to return results
Questions:
Onsite or at a testing facility
MRO or Not
