Background about Kurla Mumbai

Kurla is situated in the Centre of Mumbai, close to the new business district in Mumbai Bandra Kurla Complex.

While the population of Kurla, can be generally termed as cosmopolitan, the proportion of Muslim population in Kurla is higher then what is generally found in other areas of Mumbai.

It is estimated that there would be approximately 750 - 800 Shia families living in and around Kurla (numbering to approximately 5,000 Shia population).

History of Nazar Ali Imambargah, Kurla Mumbai.

 The foundation of the Imambargah was laid by Haji NazarAli Devji in 1921. He purchased the land and constructed the structure of the Imambargah (approximately 2,000 sq.ft.) and open space of approximately 3,500 sq.ft.

 Haji NazarAli Devji formed the ‘KSI Imambargah and Kabrastan Trust’ on 11 th August 1921 (Registration No. B – 786 (Bom)- and handed over the Imambargah Property to the Trust.

 Jaffery Madressa started in 1981 at Haji Nazarali Imambada, Kurla, Mumbai India with the support of Late Hamza Bhai Devji Jamal.

 In 1985 Muharram Majlises at the Imambargah were extended from being conducted for upto 13 days to 40 days.

 Until 1987 the Imambargah and Trust continued to be managed by Hamzabhai, the legal heir of late NazarAli Devji. Due to his failing health he could not continue to manage the Imambargah and Trust any more and therefore he handed over the property and the Trust to Khoja Shia Ithna Ashari Jamat, Mumbai – which has been managing the Imambargah since then.

History of Nazar Ali Imambargah, Kurla Mumbai.

 In 1991 Other religious / programs / Functions started during the months of Rajab, Shaban and Ramzan, including special functions on 15 th Shabaan and 9 th Rabi-ul-Awwal.

 In 2000 a computer academy was established for community students (at subsidised fees)  In 2002 Daily Iftaar arrangements during the month of Ramzan was started.

 Currently Office Bearers of KSI Jamat, Mumbai are Trustees of the KSI Imambargah and Kabrastan Trust. These include :  Haji Safdar Karmali – President of KSI Jamat, Mumbai  Haji Sabir Rashid – Vice President of KSI Jamat, Mumbai  Haji Shabbir Mukadam – Treasurer of KSI Jamat, Mumbai  Haji Yasin Badami – Managing Committee Member of KSI Jamat, Mumbai  Advocate Sajjad Patel – Legal Advisor to KSI Jamat, Mumbai 7

Activities at Haji NazarAli Imambargah

Various Socio-Religious activities are conducted at the NazarAli Imambargah throughout the year like: Daily Madressa is running since the last 29 years, which includes boys and girls.

Currently it is attended by 120 students.

Daily Jamaat Namaaz is conducted.

Felicitation programs are held for Shia students each academic year by distributing school stationary packs to every child before the commencement of the academic year at the Imambargah.

In the month of Ramzan two Quran Khwani programmes are held. Additionally religious lectures are held before Iftaar.

Approximately 250 - 300 momimneen are served Iftari every day in the month of Ramzan.

Aamal of Shab-e-Qadr on all three Nights followed by Sehri is also arranged at the Imambargah.

Activities at Haji NazarAli Imambargah

 Majalis for 50 days during Moharram and Safar which is attended by approximately 1,000 – 1,500 people for the first 13 days and by 300 - 400 people daily thereafter for the rest of the mourning period.

 Majalis on every Thursday are arranged and also on the occasion of shahadat and Wiladat of Masoomeen (as).

Grand functions and Jashn and prize Distribution programs are kept on the occasion of Wiladat of Masoomeen (as).

During the year there are various occasions wherein the Niyaz (Food) is served to Mo'meneen Nikah Ceremonies for Momineen living in the vicinity of the Imambargah.

Need for Redevelopment

 Due to shortage of space it is not possible to have multiple programs at the same time.

 Due to Shortage of space at times when a large crowd is expected it becomes difficult to manage Ladies & Gents programs together.

 Jamat Namaz gets affected if some Ladies Program is being conducted.

 The Madressa has to be rescheduled / cancelled on many occassions when some other large programs is scheduled at the Imambargah.

 Serving niyaz / iftaar to ladies and gents becomes difficult due to shortage of space.

 In the current arrangment there is not enough space for individuals to do their Ibadat in solace. For eg. In Shabe Qadr if Qaza Jamat Namaz are offered then there is no space for individual Ibadaat in Imambargah.

Need for Redevelopment Keeping in mind the growing population in the area it is felt that a larger and a more intelligently planned space is the need of the time. For this the existing structure needs to be demolished and the Imambargah needs to be reconstructed with a fresh approach.

Some Project Details

As per the new plan it is proposed to rebuild the Imambargah currently as a 2 storied building (with a provision to construct further floors if required in future) in addition to one basement floor planned for Parking, which can also be used for other activities.

Although the area as per proposed municipal plans is 7,503 sq.ft. it is estimated that another 2,777 sq.ft. will be available for use out of open areas and parking area which can be covered by way of sheds, thereby increasing the entire useable area of the Imambargah to 10,281 sq. ft.

Additional Floor Space (FSI) of approximately 1,300 sq. ft., needs to be purchased from the open market to meet the full requirement as per the Proposed plan for the new Imambargah structure.

The Lower Ground floor is to be primarily used for Parking. Additionally space is also planned for a kitchen, toilets and Wuzu khana.

The Ground floor is to be used primarily as a Baitus Salat for Gents. It also has provision for Wuzu Khana, Mimber and Office.
