The Sporting Pyramid
ELITE LEVEL
COMPETTITION LEVEL
PARTICIPATION LEVEL
FOUNDATION LEVEL




The different levels of sport can be
represented in a pyramid.
This concept is used often to develop a
continuum from foundation to elite level.
The broader the base of the pyramid the
greater the elite pool from which selection
can take place.
A link exists from base to elite level as
success creates role models who inspire
others and provide motivation to progress up
the pyramid.


FOUNDATION : grass roots level. Associated
with introducing young children to sport and
encouraging them to learn motor skills. The
UK has schemes such as TOP sport and
Dragon Sport to facilitate this.
PARTICIPATION : sport undertaken mainly for
fun and enjoyment. Skill level will vary as
some highly competent sportspeople
participate for these reasons.


COMPETITION: performance level. A more
structured form of competitive sport at club
or county level.
ELITE: performers at the highest national and
international standard.


The higher one moves up the pyramid the
higher their skill level, training needs,
support needs.
Q : For each level list what personnel an
individual would need for their sport.


